Picked our little Nero up yesterday but he seems to be scratching a lot. Spoke to the breeder and she has treated him for fleas before we picked him up. Also where he is scratching there seems to be a few pimples Anyone seen this before? He is having his next course of jabs a week tomorrow so i will ask the vet then but any help will be appreciated
Re: Puppy scratching Hiya from me and 7 month Murphy. Murphy was very itchy when we first brought him home and had a little rash on his belly where he was particularly scratching. The vet said it was just from the change of house with different dust and things like that if you see what I mean
Re: Puppy scratching Like all things puppy related ask your vet and get your mind out at ease. Anytime my dogs had a redness to their skin it was food related.
Re: Puppy scratching Hi thanks for the replies He is on the same food (Purina beta puppy) as his breeders were feeding him Hopefully it will stop in a few days
Re: Puppy scratching Today his scratching seems to be worse, he is crying when scratching too so i have booked to see the vet later. Hopefully everything will be ok
Re: Puppy scratching Good move to see the vet. I hope you get some useful advice that will help your little boy
Re: Puppy scratching Vet said our poor boy has fleas Need to clean all bedding etc and get flea treatment...we have a cat so he may have picked them up off her
Re: Puppy scratching Good news that you have a diagnosis and a solution now But, yes, fleas are yuck. With some dogs, all it takes it one flea bite and they can scratch for weeks - if they have a flea allergy. You may not even ever see the fleas. A regular flea treatment should do the trick. We have to use one on Obi as he goes to day care and, well, you know, they let just anyone into daycare! We've seen a few fleas on him but they have all been dead. We use Advantage.
Re: Puppy scratching Yea at least we know what the problem is now and that it's nothing serious He had his second jab at the same time so in 2 wks he can go out for walks
Re: Puppy scratching Glad you found the reason and that it is something easily dealt with. The anti-flea stuff these days is excellent.
Re: Puppy scratching The breeder said she treated him with frontline last friday. When will we be able to treat him again?
Re: Puppy scratching Ok, that is interesting. I might have expected the Frontline to have taken care of fleas.... What did the vet see as evidence of fleas? It doesn't take much flea action for a pup or dog to have a reaction sometimes... Frontline is generally applied every four weeks. A different product may be able to be applied sooner though I'd ask the vet about a recommendation (and then that new product would be reapplied every 4 weeks after that)
Re: Puppy scratching The instructions say every 4 weeks for treatment. If you washed your pup within 48hrs of the treatment then it may have inactivated it? Or if you brought some bedding from the breeder that may have been infected. I think someone posted up before (karen maybe???) About how difficult it is to deal with a flea infestation so I think you will want to get on top of it fairly quickly. Actually it might have been bed bugs...hmmm...anyhow I wouldn't delay dealing with the bedding. And what about "nit combing" Not sure how practical or effective that might be. Just some thoughts anyway.
Re: Puppy scratching The vet only found flea poo. I have steam cleaned all of neros bedding and steamed and hoovered our carpet. We have a cat also but have treated her with frontline. After hoovering I found only one live flea in the hoover container
