My nearly 2 year Lab is shedding hair so much that his stomach is nearly bald and his legs look very moth eaten and very thin hair at the top of his legs. He is not scratching, well rarely and the skin is not dry or inflamed. Any ideas?

My first thoughts would be parasites? Has he been wormed and flea treated regularly? Definitely a trip to he vets with that amount of hair loss.

There are no signs of parasites, no visible signs and no scratching. As you know, I don't do flea treatments unless I saw a flea, but he is due for worming, so maybe I will use a spot on wormer that does parasites as well just to rule them out, so thanks Heidrun.

Have just spent £300.00 on death of GSP and OH reluctant to spend more at vets!

What a worry :( - hope you get to the bottom of it.

Might it still be parasites though, even if you can't see anything? I thought I read somewhere that some mites are microscopic, and can cause different types of mange.

Having worked for a vet many moons ago, it doesn't look like either Demodectic or Sarcoptic mange.

May be worth having blood tests done for thyroid problems, hairloss is one of the symptoms.
Could also be that it's stress related if he's just lost his GSP mate?

Unfortunately the hair loss started before her death. But maybe he was stressed before as she was very much the pack leader :)

I don't need to use flea treatment as in forty years of dog owning I have only seen one flea on one dog! I don't believe in putting unnecessary chemicals into my dogs' bodies if there is no need to do so.
