For 3 years now I have participated in a university research project into the health of Labrador Retrievers http://www.dogslife.ac.uk/. which has recently published its findings. It is too early to draw firm conclusions but it is interesting to note that 80% of dogs participating in the project developed an illness in the first year of life. The project is ongoing and a considerable amount of data has already been collected which is now being analysed and it is hoped that that it will be possible to explore the relationships between various aspects of a dog's life (diet, exercise, location) and the risk of them developing a disease. As a bonus the website allows the owner to keep a record of the dog's development, including photographs and details weight, diet and exercise. Anyone else taken part in this project?

Yes, I take part, have done so for nearly the last two years, he will be two in January. He didn't have an illness in his first year, so I must be part of the 20% ;D

I was wondering exactly the same... the % seems unbelievably high... but if an illness means 'taken to the vet for something other than routine vaccinations'... um, still think it's high! But I was listening to the Infinite Monkey Cage earlier on R4, and discovered that in countries where they have more internal parasites people do not suffer from allergies in the same way. No parasites = increase in allergies... wondering if it is the same for dogs?? ???
