Sam was a serious puppy who turned into a quite solemn dog who lived for retrieving and food . Never an overly fussy dog , rather a silent, very laid back lad who only ever showed enthusiasm when his dummy came out He was socialised as a young pup and whilst enjoying being around other dogs, he would always be the one on the outer edges , watching rather than being one of the group , to the point that I often worried that maybe he wasnt actually happy, but his enjoyment of retrieving made me satisfied that he was happy with his lot, this was just the way Sam was and will be . He has been a star with little Millie , and at the risk of sounding soppy, he has taught her a lot , not to be afraid , how to stay close off lead and yes , I really mean this , he has trained her almost as much as I have and in turn , she hero worships him . Very recently , something quite lovely has happened , they have begun to interact and really play together and its a joy to behold ;D To see my big lad fetching toys to give to Millie , then play bow to instigate play is just so lovely and in turn, she is more than happy to oblidge . Every morning, they play in the hallway , never a cross word, just happy play, this is repeated for an hour or so early evening before they crash out . She follows him everywhere , when both off lead she is right behind him, they have even started retrieiving together , she following Sam to find the dummy but allowing him to pick up and bring back , but she is there one step behind him . Its the play that gladdens my heart , Sam is loving every minute of it and not quite the solemn serious lad he used to be , lovely
