I know there is an article on here somewhere but cant find it . Sam is good at dropping his dummy into my hands but with a ball, he has been the devils own the last couple of mornings at the play field and its not even his ball : I had stopped taking toys to the field as it seemed to encourage him to be quite silly but the last couple of days, he has blatantly taken a ball from anoher dog and wont give back to me , I call him, he comes , I tell him to sit, he does , I tell him to leave , he wont . Its as though he knows that if he gives me the ball , I will give it back to its rightful owner , I dont know quite what to do about it , stop taking him for a while or persist in trying to get him to let go of this prize possession . I offer him a treat in exchange, but that doesnt work , maybe I should carry another ball in my pocket and try for an exchange ? I must add that he doesnt bully the other dog, a chocolate Lab who is Sams friend , in fact the other dog happily gives Sam his ball .
Re: Not giving back Hi Kate, this is probably the article you were thinking of. Treats have to be very good initiallly. With Rachael for example, she would not let go of her dummy for any of the treats I normally use including toast cubes and her favourite cheese. But bring on the roast chicken, and away we go.
Re: Not giving back Thats the one thanks Pippa Its never a problem with his dummy and just him and me , can see that the mistake I have made is trying to prise the ball out of his mouth , will stop that and also take something tasty and smelly like sausage bits or chicken He always gives the ball up nicely once we are away from the other dogs , must be a possession thing .
