Before we went to see the litter Dexter was part of, people kept reminding us that big paws meant big dog. We remembered it but thought labs are big dogs anyway so what difference will it make.

Well Dexter is certainly showing signs of being a biiiiiig dog.

About 4 weeks ago, my fiancé took him to the vet for his weigh and worm. He went every 4 weeks up until he was 6 months. So Dexter walks off to the scales with the vet. The vet comes out and says to my fiancé, "He's 32kg, what are you feeding him?" To which my fiancé replied "bricks by the sound of it" The vet wasn't nasty about it and just reminded us about potential hip problems in the future which we know about anyway. I felt awful though, felt like I'd let Dexter down. But less of me waffling on, this is Dexter now

Oh Paige,he is gorgeous....32kgs.......wow! Think the forum has Little and Large Dexters!....my Dex,I believe is pretty much fully grown at 15 months is 22 kgs!!! He's a totally different build to your Dexter though so no comparison at all....think you just have to be careful with fast growth and weight gain in puppies/young dogs but your vet sounds like he has advised you.
Have to laugh at you having him lying on you on the sofa though.....My Dexter is a dead weight to man oeuvre when he's asleep and I want to stretch out....don't know how you must manage! ;D x

He is very, very lovely. And taking make up lessons from Obi!

    32kg at 7 months - that's a lot!

My boy is chunky too, and we've been signed up for labrador weight watches since he was 4 months, poor thing. Much sympathy, but sounds like you've got good advice from the vet.

Thanks everyone :) I know 32kg is a lot and even with people saying he's going to be big, losing some weight won't harm him. His Dad has been 40kg but muscly! The vet said his 'lines' aren't right which I was annoyed about because when we first brought him home, I was so conscious of them!

We'll see how we go over the next few months. Puppy weight watchers may be an idea. The last thing he needs are hip and joint problems

Paige - not sure if you know but our Lilly has bad hip dysplasia.
When we went to see the specialist ortho vet when she was about 11 months he said although she wasn't overweight she would do better to be lighter and advised us to cut her food down by a THIRD. We thought that was quite harsh but in truth she never noticed and it has kept her nice and slim.
The point of this is really not be afraid to start that diet ;)
Its much easier doing a doggy diet than a human one :p

Poor Lily! And poor you, Jacqui! I bet thats a stress at times.

Have to admit, we've lowered his food to 400g a day from 500g and I thought dropping 100g was harsh. We've laid off the treats. Dexter has a dentastick (or is it dentastix?), weighed amount of kibble mixed with fat free yogurt and the odd apple. Hopefully they aren't too high in calories. But if anyone has any tips for treats it would be appreciated :)

What a gorgeous big boy :). I often give Harley bananas in her kong, or Apple or natural yoghurt. These are all good for them as not fatty :)
