A new announcement from the Kennel Club following the highlighting of the shortfalls in the Asssured Breeder scheme by JH on her recent blog

Can only be a good thing and maybe prevent a lot of heartache for some new owners , am tempted to say that this should have been the remit a long time ago, but better late than never .

It was a completely meaningless thing to be a part of without any inspections. Hopefully this will improve the lot of puppies and dogs as it should.

Reading the blog it is clear that there are a lot of well-informed people out there who are justifiably angry that they have been let down by the Kennel Club, a prestigious organisation. I used the ABS when I purchased Benson, now I wonder what I have let myself in for.

Just as membership of the ABS has not to date been any quarantee of quality, nor has membership been an indicator of a bad breeder. Many, many good breeders belong to the scheme. So you really have no reason to worry, especially if you made sure that your dog's parents had all the requisite health certificates.

What I think is really important, is that the KC have recognised some of the 'holes' in the scheme and are attempting to 'plug' them. This new protocol should make it harder for puppy farmers to join the scheme.

Let's hope the K.C.'s next move will be to ensure that puppies cannot be registered with the KC at all, unless their parents reach minimum standards. We may have to wait a while for that one.....
