Interesting article on the main site http://www.thelabradorsite.com/

I just wondered how many of you have microchipped dogs? All of my spaniels are legally docked which means they have to be microchipped by law. This rule has been in force for several years now but even before the tail docking rules I always had my dogs microchipped. Do most Labrador breeders have puppies chipped before they let them go to their new homes?

Same here too , done with the second vaccinations as a puppy . Millie had a chip detected when she was taken to the pound after being picked up as a stray . The owners were contacted , they were not local to our area and said that they didnt want her back :( :( Her details were changed with PetLog as soon as she came to us , its a safety net for sure x

The breeder had microchips done for all the puppies in Charlie's litter - then the details were transferred to the new owners.

Harley wasn't done until she was 3 months old as my vet said it would be too painful for her before that age! ???

Lady has been chipped as a puppy too. Don't forget to register with Petlog (I think?). There's an upgrade option too so you can put in temporary addresses if you go on holiday.

In most states of Australia it is compulsory to microchip dogs by 12 weeks of age. Obi was microchipped by the breeder before being sold.

    Re: Microchipping

    Lilly is chipped.
Our vet suggested deferring it until she was spayed as they knew and agreed we were doing this before her first season at 6 months (I know....another controversial topic)
I hindsight, I think we should have got her done ASAP but luckily no harm done - the suggestion was that it was a bit sore, and we might as well wait until she was under anaesthesia.

I find this topic very interesting.
I don't know if anyone else was affected but this, but we had notification that there had been a batch of faulty chips (Back Home microchips I think) and we were asked to go to our vets and be checked. We did.......they had a bit of a struggle and had to use a second machine (because the scanner battery was a bit low?? hmmm) I must admit I wasn't filled with confidence, so was actually quite pleased when we had a subsequent letter asking us to go for a replacement chip around 6 months later "just in case".
Which we did. Not sedation, local, etc....and no problem whatsoever - made us wonder why we had been encouraged to delay to start with. Scanned nice and easily afterwards.

I was very aware recently of a LostDogs-Scotland dog that had been found after more than 3 years - it had been stolen and sold on by a drug addict apparently and despite the new owner having reportedly taken it to the vet several times, it had, again apparently, never been scanned for a chip. The link to the dog is here......http://www.lostdogs-scotland.org.uk/re-united-dogs/item/snowie21?category_id=5

I know there has been a recent thread about developing new technology to keep dogs safe, but it strikes me that we maybe don't capitalise on the known existing technology that could improve the safety of our dogs :-\

It still wouldn't change my opinion as to whether to do the chipping in the first place.
I suppose if a dog was scanned every time it needed vet contact it MIGHT deter "owners" from getting essential treatment....but lots of ifs and buts in that theory.
I'm interested in what others think of this though.

Barley was microchipped when he was neutered, it was cheaper for some reason.

Puzzle was microchipped with her second puppy vaccinations

Chipped at same time as second vaccination - she didn't even flinch.

Also paid for the upgrade - for only £10 extra you can change addresses as many times as you need to over the course of the dog's life (we will be making full use of that facility ;) ), and as David said, you can also put in temp / holiday changes. Worth it just for that in my book.

I don't think we were offered that Clare - would be great for holidays right enough. Although I do see you can buy temporary collars for that as well. Look a bit like the plastic wrist-bands you get in hospital. Not quite sure what the benefit over having a mobile number on a tag though.
We have 2 sets of tags though so when we are away and Lilly is at our SIL's for her holidays she has the tag with their contact details.

The upgrade isn't done through the vets, but when you log on to the PetLog website and create an account.

Brew has my mobile number on her tag - I always think that as a dog is most likely to go missing whilst out walking, it's the most useful number to use! Wish I could train her to recite her address though in the way I did with my girls when they were younger ;D ;D

Hattie chipped when she had second puppy jab, didn't hurt one little bit, she was too busy licking the vet to even notice ::). Charlie was chipped by the rescue centre and we just changed the address. :)
