Today's walk was great fun but Holly's recall seems to have taken a step backwards. Normally her recall is fairly good. Today she wanted to go off with everyone we met and ignored my calls and whistles. It happened several times.

As soon as we got away from people she was great - charging out the undergrowth at my first whistle and sitting at my feet.

Does anyone have any thoughts why she should suddenly start to behave like this?

I'm my limited experience...this is normal.....we have had to back up and revise quite a few times...I always up the ante a bit after we've had a failed return to his whistle....ie we do some really, easy recalls and I give him more treats or up the treat values......i also know now the situations where I dont even bother to whistle him, because I know he will fail ie he's spotted a cat,or something tasty/ disgusting in the bushes ;D he would never come to me then!its a bit disheartening when you have a fail but right it off for that walk on that day and try again tomorrow ,good luck x

I have worn Amy's recall (here) out. I use it for to many different things. Like When she is having a sniff, I will casually say " here, come on".

So have started whistle recall yesterday.

Get some people round and train her to recall away from them in a controlled situation. Have them even with treats in their hand and have your dog recall back to you for an even better reward.

Sadly the more your recall fails the more you are reinforcing the not returning behaviour or basically the dog is saying I don't have to come back to that call. Probably better to pop your dog on the lead in the interim when there are people around and then let her off for a good run in the bushes when you can reinforce your recall with success and praise.
