Lady is just a pet, but I do take her beating on a shoot run by a friend. Well today Lady and I were in woodland looking for a bird when a shot pheasant landed about 50yds in front of us. Lady looked at me hard so I took a chance and told her tp "get on". Off she ran, picked the bird up very carefully and delivered it to my hand as neatly as anything. It was probably a one-off, but she made me feel very pleased with her!

I'm not into the gundog stuff (although dream of gundog-like behaviour.......) but know Lilly would be perfect rustling all the pheasants up from the undergrowth LOL. Think she chased up a dozen this afternoon on our walk! Out and about she is not at all interested in retrieving, just following her nose. Did pretty good on the recalls, but nothing challenging - not at that stage yet. Well done to Lady.......I'll just dream on...... Jac

I've been re-charging her recall with the help of Pippa's book and we're in stage 2 at the moment. Most interesting but her normal recall using tthe old signal has become very strong and positive and I don't think it's a coincidence. Also I use the command "close" when I want her on the lead and that worked well too. Really chuffed by comments today about how calm she is and well controlled. Who would have thought it! The game keeper called out today that we need to get that dog under control then he said oh it's not the dog I was thinking of, she's your dog so ok no need to put her lead on. Way Hey! It will all go horribly wrong tomorrow.
Re: Small Black Dog Retrieves Cock Pheasant! Hi David and well done!! It is so exciting and rewarding when a dog starts retrieving. I hesitate to say this because I don't want to put a 'damper' on your enthusiasm. But the next stage is sometimes (not always) a slight loss of control as the dog realises how much fun the game is and starts to pre-empt your 'get on' command. If you can manage to restrain yourself from sending her too quickly it will help preserve her steadiness and control. If she seems a bit excited, heel her away from the retrieve for a few steps before turning back to send her. Good luck next time Pippa
