we JUST got a Lab puppy. On walks she will walk so close to me she is going between my legs (from behind), getting kneed if she is next to me , or ripping my shoes off from stepping on my heels. How can I get her to walk farther away from me so we both have room to walk? Her birthday is 10/8/13

Re: Tripping me Welcome Don't forget that your pup is young and the world is a big scary place. She'll feel safest when she's glued to your legs (mine still 'hides' behind my legs if he's scared) so with time and gained confidence she'll venture to your side. That and she'll be too big to walk between your legs! Lots of vocal encouragement and some tasty treats when she takes a few steps to your side, perhaps introducing the 'heel' command and she'll be fine. Good luck and I hope you don't fall over her before you have her trained!

I am impressed with the fact that we have had her about 19 hours with no accidents and she was not house trained before this. She seems very smart (but stubborn LOL. She is affraid to go out the door but once she is outside of the door she is fine. (she is affraid of goig down stairs too)
Re: Tripping me Hi there, and welcome Your lab puppy is beautiful! Some of the clinginess will subside as she settles in. But in the meantime, when you are outside, try walking in a square, and making frequent turns so that she has to concentrate on where you are and where she is. Lots of encouragement and keep the 'pace' up so that she doesn't have time to worry Ultimately, some dogs do walk along next to their owners in an agreeable position without much help. But most need to be taught using heelwork techniques. There is more information on teaching heelwork, or walking nicely on a lead in this section of the website.

Re: Tripping me Hi and welcome she is a beauty ;D I use heel and give Harley 5 months old) treats for 'walk nicely'. I use these words for her to walk nicely by the side of me and not pulling. I started giving her treats every 5 steps and have worked up to around 35-40 steps for a treat. Sometimes I just praise her which she also responds well too. Well done with having no accidents
Re: Tripping me What a nice looking pup! So, she is about 12 weeks old, which is older than most pups go to their new homes. Where was she before? Did she stay with the breeder? I would guess that staying close to you is just nervousness for now, and will wear off as she feels more at home. At least you don't need to worry about her charging off to play with other dogs just yet!!!

She is not motivated by food at all. She is with praise though. She LOVES praise.

My 5 year old named her Brownie. Still no accidents. I am proud of her. She has not pooped yet though.

[/quote] i agree, she's a beauty! i also think what karen said is probably spot-on... she is well older than most pups are. my first lab (yellow male) was 4 months old when we got him, and it took him ages to build up some confidence - and even so, he was always a bit of a mama's boy (which i never minded one whit!). it could just be she needs time to build up her confidence - reward her forays out from betwixt your legs with small bits of treats and encouraging words, i'd say. luck!
