Hi, I have a 6 month old lab. When i open my gate she runs. She does not listen when I call her. What can I do ? Please help :'(
Re: gate open - labrador Hi and welcome , can I suggest that if she is unreliable , please keep her on lead for her own safety and work hard on her recall , Pippa ( editor of this forum and site ) has an excellent book out recently called Total Recall , well worth you buying from Amazon .
Re: gate open - labrador Hi and welcome......I agree with everyone about the recall, you may also be able to calm your pup down a little at the door. We had an over excited boy at the front door when people call and at the back door when he thinks he's going out so I've taught him to sit and the doors only get opened when he's calm. If he got up or got over excited when I started to open the doors they would be shut again until he had sat down quietly. The front door with visitors is still a work in progress but at the back door Riley will sit and wait at the open door until he's released. A lead or long line will definitely be your friend until your girl is calm and reliable. Good luck
Re: gate open - labrador Hi Sally, I agree totally with bbrown's advice. We too have "trained" Charlie to do exactly the same and he now sits at the back door, gates, etc. He used to be a front door dasher but now he waits and does not dash out, but still trying to get him to sit when he knows there's someone there. Work in progress with how he then greets the person that comes through the front door - now that's definately a lot harder but improving!! If Charlie can do it believe me any dog can!! Helen
