My lad is a black-as-night boy, but I've noticed little flakes akin to dandruff in his coat. I assume his skin is dry, but I am reluctant to bathe him with supposed moisturizing shampoos as that would likely do more harm than good due to the unique oily coats of Labs.

What other options do I have to help? He is 9 weeks old. His vet didn't seem too concerned when I mentioned it - and, granted, it's not as if he's snowing everywhere he goes. ;D

Some people swear by adding some fish oils etc to the food, even heard of Guinness being added lol

    At 9 weeks I wouldn't be worrying.

It can be food related though so keep an eye on the dog but don't panic. If the skin is a healthy colour under the coat and not bright pink or red then your pup is ok

It all depends if the dandruff is walking! If it is, that is the cheytella (can't spell it) mite. If it is static it could be due to the stress of leaving home or just dry skin. I agree with you I wouldn't bath him, perhaps a wee bit of oil added to his food, but not much.

    Re: Doggy dandruff?

I had an interesting discussion about doggy dandruff with our swimming coach.
The discussion about wheat came into it. Some dog foods vary the type of grain they contain depending on what is most economic and are less consistent than some of the more expensive brands (apparently)
I must admit I was blaming mine on too much washing from swimming and poo-rolling.
Lilly's coat has been pretty good since switching grain free, although I have also changed our "hair product" ;)
I am not necessarily advocating changing food, just something else to consider.

Our poor Daisy rabbit had a cheytiella infection (don't know spelling either) - got quite nasty :(
I guess there are loads of possible causes for dry skin.

We had a similar problem with our puppy and just mentioned it to the vet when we took him to be weighed and he said as long as his skin looked healthy, which it did, then he wasnt too concerned.

He seemed to think it was a fairly common problem and is caused by a variety of things..namely diet. He advised us to either pop a cod liver oil capsule into his food or get some good quality Olive Oil (dont add too much or you will have a mess on your hands) and to brush him with the flea comb to stimulate the natural oils in the skin. We noticed a HUGE difference with Ollie

    I hope this helps :)

We have 2 black Labs and a while ago now their coats were getting quite bad with white flakes (dandruff).
As they do quite a lot of retreiving from water, it was washing the natural oils from their coats.
We tried cod liver oil which worked to a certain extent but the dandruff kept coming back.

    Then we found this http://www.lintbells.com/online-store/3/yumega-dog-250ml
You can get it cheaper if you search.

We have only used half the dose till the coat improved, which it did :)
Then just a maintenance dose every couple of days.
