My agility trainer also suggested that changing Charlie's food might help to calm him down  . She suggested Skinners Rough which has about 12% protein and she feeds her dogs on it, no additivies, preservaties etc. As Charlie is a pet and not a working/agility dog this is all he needs. I contacted Fish4Dogs and asked them the protein content in the food we feed our dogs and they said it has "26% which is in the premium sector pet foods market, and it tends to be the sugar that causes problems which this food does not have. A high protein food may result in a high energy return and feeding amounts should be according to lifestyle". Can anyone help with alternatives brands with less protein and no rubbish in it to bulk out please? Thanks Helen x

    Hi Helen

I buy a complete raw food from www.naturalinstinct.com which is 15% protein (varies slightly by flavour) which isn't cheap but my boys thrive on it. Fish 4 dogs is a great product and I tend to agree that often people look at protein content and ignore other potential causes such as sugars, additives etc.

my friend has a totally bonkers springer that was transformed on a CSJ food which has a very low protein content about 5% - it did make a dramatic difference almost straightaway. I'm not sure which of their products it is but it is probably worth a look at. I'll ask when I next see her. It also is very cost effective too.

    Good luck!

Hi Helen , I have fed CSJ for many years now with good results . The basic one is £11 for a 15 kilo sack, it has no additives or preservatives and is about 20% protein . The reason it is inexpensive is because they do not advertise or pass to shops to sell , you can either order it online or, if you go to their website , on the menu is a list of stockists www.csjk9.com
There are loads of different foods , I use the basic one Natural Champ at the price above but add a few morsels to it, veggies , bits of fish or cooked lamb heart , never ever had any iffy tums using it .

You cannot compare the protein levels of raw food and dried food. There is some complication formula to work out the comparisons, but I am afraid I have forgotten it! How about Burns Active which name suggest the opposite of what it is, it is supposed to calm dogs.

I contacted CSJ about boosting Riley's immune system and they were very helpful. Even sent a couple of feed samples. Not large volumes but if Charlie doesn't have a sensitive tum perhaps enough to try for a feed or two.

I know lots of people try quite a few types of complete feed before they find one that genuinely suits their dog. Good luck :)

Thank you for your suggestions. Have been looking online and Burns do a complete for Alert dogs which is for assistance dogs that apparently helps their concentration and keeps them calm for training. They don't need the high protein and it has 18.5%. Maybe a little too low as he will hopefully be off lead and will need it? Their nutritionist emailed me and suggested that or any of their adult foods. The CJS is 20% so just 6% less than he is currently on. Confussed.com!! Helen
