Barley got weighed the other day, it has left me puzzled.

He is now 40.6kg, last time he got weighed early december time he was 38.7kg, so almost a 2kg weight gain. But the confusing thing it, he feels skinnier and has more energy. It is not muscle gain as he has been on restricted walks, with little running around, just controlled road walks. So this has got me confused, he has gained weight but feels thinner ???. And to add we used the same scales, and both times they were on 0 when he stepped on.

Hmm... had he just been drinking water? Wouldn't account for all that, mind... Was he weighed at the same time of day both times? Recent food/water consumption and evacuation of bowels could make quite a difference!!!

It was returning from a walk, he had emptied his bowels on the walk, and also peed for england like usual. Around the same time, afternoon ish

That's all my theories used up, then. :-\ Different time of day could have gone a long way to explaining it...

    Hmm that does sound odd.

The only time I've had a discrepancy like that is when I've forgotten a foot! Lol sometimes they hang off the edge of the scale and you get a smaller weight than they actually are - maybe that happened when you weighed him before and this time you got all of him?

You say he doesn't look like he's bigger or put on more muscle but it could be in places that aren't that noticeable? Muscle weighs more than fat so if he has muscled up a bit that could explain it.

all 4 feet on both times, he is a bit of a pro with scales as he sees them so often, when we go to the consulting rooms at the vets the first thing he does is go on the scales, no need to tell him, he just does it.

Well i have been quite lazy with his training lately as i have not been having a good few weeks. Waist is definitely smaller as i just measured him, always do this after a weigh. i need to get into the habit of measuring him weekly, so i can gauge a better idea of his waist line.

Well, this is going to sound very alarming and I apologise for that. One remote possibility is some kind of internal growth. Just speaking from my experience with my last boy who had a very large abdominal tumour and the experience of a friend's Lab who collapsed one day and was found to have a 2kg tumour in her abdomen, not visible from outside. Now, as I said that sounds terribly alarming and it is probably NOT at all what is going on here. It's just a possibility to consider and raise with the vet perhaps, if you really, really think that he has gained significant weight and you are absolutely sure that it is not muscle or fat or something wrong with the scales.

He has to go to the vets soon for his Kennel cough inoculation, so he will get a full health check them. Will see what they say about his weight gain, and book him for x-rays whilst we are there :)

Charlie says the vet's scales LIE. They LIE. Unless they show him very much lighter, in which case we just tell him to get his bum off the wall. ;D ;D ;D

Well, seriously, scales aren't always perfect. Unless they are new, or very well maintained, even electronic ones can be a bit dodgy.

Sounds like a plan :) See what the vet thinks. They will probably just do a physical examination.
