Not a new thing by any means! I'm sure I am not the only puppy owner driven to distraction by this. I have scoured the Internet, I have tried everything, at least twice. And still she bounces on everything and everybody (well tries). I have started Puppy Classes. Our class consists of one, tiny and cute Spaniel, two Rottweilers, one incredibly tall hairy creature and three Labradors. All three Labradors jump up all the time, even when being handled by the trainer. Their class mates stay with their paws on the floor. It appears to be something that Labradors just do and we have to wait for them to grow out of it. Makes me feel like less of a failure, so I hope it makes other Lab puppy owners feel better too. Doesn't mean I've given up on trying to train her out of it or to find alternative behaviours. If I don't let her know what I want how is she ever going to learn
Re: Jumping up Its probably because Labradors are such happy go lucky dogs , they love everyone they meet and want everyone to love them back : The problem I used to encounter was when Sam would jump up, I would order a sharp NO , and the person would fuss him , saying " Its alright, I dont mind " Well , sorry but I did mind, he is a very big dog and could easily knock someone off their feet so it was, for me , vital to crack the habit . Distraction worked well , as he loved his food , so a sharp NO , then a treat if he obeyed , show him the treat and dont let him have it if he didnt obey, he got the message, eventually
Re: Jumping up Yes, labs love everybody and with their good natures everybody loves them. I am training Molly to sit when people, joggers, other dogs etc go past. This is usually a bit of a tussle as I try to restrain her exhumerant nature. Today we had success. I gave her the 'sit' then told her to 'wait' and she did. It is a start. I always train my dogs to Sit at the kerb. I think it reminds them who is boss. As a motorist I like to see a dog sat at the kerb, it implies control. Molly's little bottom plonks itself on the pavement without being asked about 60% of the time. I still reward her. I reckon she's earned it.
Re: Jumping up I am not sure how this has happened but I was going with the ignore the dog until she has calmed down then say hello. She still jumps on me! Hubby walks in, makes a massive fuss and she doesn't jump up on him anymore! I tried it and she didn't jump on me either! She has only jumped up once on some one when we where out so haven't tested this on strangers!
Re: Jumping up It just seems a thing Labradors like to do, especially at feeding times !! I'm the exact same with Bailey, tried to stop him doing it using a treat, but he jumps up for the treat, catch 22 !! Never mind they eventually grow out of it.
