Re: New article: How does your Labrador see the world Most interesting. I'd already noticed that Lady's vision seemed much better than mine in twilight conditions. Concerning not being able to see red objects, I washed all my dummies in the washing machine a while back and took all the usual scent out of them. Lady just could not find the orange one in the grass even though she was only a few feet from it. Once I'd got my scent onto it again she had no problems. Very marked. I read an interesting article in one of the shooting mags some time ago about American hunters using day glow orange hunting vests so they were less vulnerable to being accidentally shot, but that the vests were invisible to deer. However, some hunters understandably would wash their clothing from time to time, but not realise that the whiteners in detergent made the clothing fluoresce in the ultra-violet that showed up like a beacon to deer because they can see in that wavelength.
Re: New article: How does your Labrador see the world Just did a bit of googling about the deer thing because I thought it was really interesting that they might be able to see ultraviolet light. Apparently the jury is out on that as studies have been inconclusive about what they actually see in the UV spectrum. Apparently humans have a UV filter in our eyes that stops most UV light getting to our retinas (I did not know that before!) but deer do not have this filter - hence the supposition that they may be able to see UV light. Interesting stuff!
