    Hi everyone,

Meg has been taking medication for approx 6 months now. I bought Arden Grange Liver paste to wrap her tablets in. Up until Saturday night she would take them, no problem. Sat night and Sunday morning she refused and I had just ordered 5 more tubes so have had to cancel the order. I have now sent off for pill pockets, has anyone used these? This morning I had to give them to her physically. Don't like doing that, she has 5 to take at the moment in the morning but only one at night so that's not too bad.

Pill pockets should arrive today so will try them tonight and let you all know.

    Jen

:( not good. I hope they work. I'm lucky that Harley will take all medication without being in wrapped or covered in anything :)

Will she take the medication with a piece of cheese?

    Hi Karen,

Yes she will, but she's not stupid, eats the cheese and spits tablet out. :)

When one of my dogs had to have twice daily anti seizure drugs , I used to buy tubs of pate from the supermarket , the most highly smelling one possible, and dip the tablet in to coat it well , always worked for Lily x

We use wafer thin turkey ham, again because it's smells so strongly!
Could you mould it inside of a cheese slice maybe, they're like plasticine (that doesn't look right written down).

I squeeze the cheese round the tablet. Easier with cheaper cheese :)

I used pill pockets once but I don't remember them working too well...

I've always found cheese to be pretty good. I had a dog that was really unwell with kennel cough in one of my kennels once. He wouldn't eat anything but had to have meds. I used to cut up about six or eight cubes of cheese and hide the tablets in one or two. Gave him a couple of 'empty' cubes first and then a tablet one then an empty one etc so he never knew which one had the meds in.

Pate sounds like a good idea, you could roll it into a small ball around the tablet.

Peanut butter can work as a pill coating. We also use the cheap cheese method. Or a cube of ham with a pocket cut into it, into which you put the pill. 5 tablets is a lot of ham cubes though...

TM, yep, that's how you spell plasticine :)

    Thanks folks,

Don't think pill pockets are going to work. She's very suspicious is my Megs bless her.

I like the idea of the pate and peanut butter. Will try that. I've tried cheese and ham and like I say, she's not stupid, she eats the cheese or ham and then spits the pill out.

The arden grange paste was like pate but thing is with Megs she gets bored with having the same thing so will go and buy some peanut butter and pate. At least if she won't have it I can! :D :D

Will she catch food in her mouth if you throw it? My old dog, a weimeraner, would snap up food thrown, so we'd hide tablets in cheese, chuck a couple of empty ones & praise her for catching it, then the pills would be chucked & finish off with an empty one. She'd gobble them down so quick. If we just hand fed it, she'd literally suck off the cheese and spit the pill out

    Hi Kate,

This'll make you laugh. Meg never caught a ball in her mouth if you threw it to her when she younger.

Think I've got an odd ball for a lab. She would never retrieve a ball if we threw it for her, didn't matter how much training we tried, she preferred to play football, tap the ball to her and she would tap it back, but if a child threw a ball she would go and retrieve and bring it back.

    Make you laugh don't they?
