Hi Guys, so our 7 month old Choccy Lab has had gunky eyes recently. he had it before Christmas and I noticed it was green, not lots of it but as soon as he waking up, took him to vets and they said mild conjuctivitis and gave him some drops (Ridiculously expensive!!!!) which we really struggled to get in his eyes as he was wriggling around so much! Anyway they did clear up but have noticed it again this week, its not loads just a bit in the morning but it is green/yellowy colour. Should I be going back to the vets or does ayone know any home remedies which help or cheaper options than paying full price at the vets????
Re: Eye Gunk Penny went through a phase of having gunky eyes when she woke up. It's wasn't green though and her eyes weren't sore. We figured out it was because she sleeps in the kitchen by the washing mashing where we keep our gym bags after spraying them with febreeze. No more febreeze = no more eye gunk. Perhaps there's something in the environment that is irritating your pups eyes? Especially as this is the second case in a short amount of time. I just used to bathe Penny's eyes when I got her up with a bit of tissue/cotton wool and warm water to keep them clean. If they gunk is really green and the eyes look bloodshot then I would say definately take him to the vets. But maybe try bathing them a couple times a day and think if there's any environmental triggers eg air fresheners or deodorant getting sprayed around the pup?
Re: Eye Gunk As well as air freshener type things, scented candles were also mentioned as a potential irritant. Good luck getting to the bottom of it
Re: Eye Gunk He sleeps in the hallway so away from any air freshners/deodrants/candles etc, it could be the floor wipes I am using?! Or the washing tablets from washing his bedding and blankets......or could be the muddy water he loves playing in. His actual eyes dont look sore or red. I will bathe them with warm water on cotton pads tonight again and see if that makes a difference.
Re: Eye Gunk Something to try to help to soothe is used and cooled tea bags , wont clear infection but will soothe irritation and it works too
Re: Eye Gunk Both my dogs, when young, had gunky eyes now and then. They seemed to grow out of it, but I did bathe their eyes when it appeared. Add a teaspoon of salt to the warm water first (1 tspn to 1 cup of water) to create a saline solution. Use that to bathe his eyes. Don't forget the treats too
Re: Eye Gunk Dex had a run of conjunctivitis and sore eyes when we first got him.he had 3 lots of steroid cream and ABs and then my vet said no more as it wasn't good for him and he would grow out of it.in our case it was something to do with excess skin of his 3 rd eyelid,it would rub on his other eyelid and become inflamed, sore and gunky.this is a really common thing and it does have a name but I can't rememeber it,sorry . My vet told me to use tears naturelle, they are human saline drops and cost a couple of pounds from the chemist.the vet said they would lubricate his eye and hopefully stop the irritation until he grew out of it at around 12 months ....which he did!i still have some in the fridge now and as long as they are in date( 6 weeks from opening) I give him a little drop even now if we've been in a sandy, dusty area x
Re: Eye Gunk We usually get a bit of gunk after going to the beach - last a few days and settles with a little bathing.
