Hmmm. Why on earth does Simba only want to go one way when I get to the intersection at the top of the hill by my house?? And when I say, "only wants to go one way", I mean he is planted in the road (as he's extended to the end of the leash and started across the road in the direction he wants to go) and absolutely REFUSING to go anywhere but across the (relatively) busy street. I mean, it's kinda comical but annoying at the same time. I have tried with "some" success to do the "let's go" and stop pulling against his pull, if you know what I mean, but it doesn't work that great, even with the treats. Usually I have to physically haul him out of the road and back to the sidewalk, with him resisting all the way, me saying "Come on, Simba, let's go!" in my happy voice. There are cars going by, I can't fuss with him too long standing there in the street. Seriously I cringe to think what this looks like to people in cars passing by as I am bent over, dragging this dog along. Once we have taken a few steps the other way he then gives up and walks happily along the sidewalk with me. I don't get it. I am trying to train him to respond to the "let's go" with limited success, hopefully it will get better, but in the meantime I wish I knew what is the big deal about that particular road. :-\

Re: Only one way will do Oh yes, we walk there a lot. I really don't get it. Just more houses and sidewalks. And conversely, I've never had anything bad happen on the way he doesn't want to go, either. It's just weird! I do think that this "plant it and don't move" is a bit of a holdover from previous owner. I vaguely remember my son saying his girlfriend was complaining that Simba didn't want to walk on the leash, or something. So, I don't know. But this corner has been a pretty consistent balking point from early on. And it seems to be getting worse.

It's usually when he wants to get to another dog/interesting smell/plastic bag. And yes, treats have limited impact on it. Sometimes, for good measure, he adds "bounce up and down on the spot". : Charlie and Simba are so similar in some of their behaviours!
Re: Only one way will do Knowing how Simba is so led by his stomach do you think he has found something tasty in the past ,along that route?if it was before your time with him I guess you will never know but it could be something?if it was,boy it must have been a good snack to live on his memory all this time! ;D

When their brother was doggy sitting, I got a frantic call from him saying the dog had collapsed on the high street, and couldn't get up. I said "Are you outside the chippy? Did you try to walk straight past it". He said "yes actually we're right outside now". At which moment the fish shop lady came out and said "Is this Sascha? There's her sausage bless her". This dog got a mini sausage from the lady on her walk every night, doggy sitter didn't know and tried to walk on by. Dog had other ideas. I wonder if you've given Simba a treat or something at that point in the past, to help with road anxiety or what ever? They say dogs (and people!) will do what ever works for them!

She betrayed our secret too... not by immediately making her way to the pub when let out, but being the only one of the three of us who didn't return home smelling of Impulse spray and Polo mints. One whiff of the dog, and my parents knew she'd been to the pub... Clare
Re: Only one way will do Well, he does get treats there as part of the happy "let's go" routine. But I don't think that's it. I think that it is something to do with some super yummy garbage he scarfed along the way at some point. Don't know exactly when, I mean, he's ALWAYS scarfing garbage : He also will employ the "lie down and not move" technique when he finds something to nibble at times. He hasn't thought of doing that at this special intersection, though, thankfully. The last thing I need is for him to be LYING in the road. I do worry, as well, if he ever gets out of the yard that he will make a bee line here and run across the road - it's not SUPER busy but it's the busiest road nearest to us.
