Marley finished her 2 weeks of clavamox for her severe uti and they tested her urine and it came back still very infected with crystals. They want her off for 2 weeks to clear her system and then plan to do a sterile collection and try to figure out specifically what bacteria so they can prescribe the correct one. She's only been off for 3 days and is back to peeing every 5 minutes on the floor and in her crate which she didn't do. I'm trying cranberry tablets starting today but I don't think we can wait 2 weeks. She'll be peeing blood again in the next day or two for sure. I do think she has a recessed vulva but we can't keep her on meds until her first heat right??? Poor girl is miserable. Us too. We've never Rd Krueger experienced this with such a young puppy.
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Oh dear, what a hard time your poor pup (and you) is having! So sorry to hear this - I've never dealt with UTIs and have only ever had male dogs so am not much help to you on the advice with this one. Just wanted to send sympathy and hugs and hopes that you will be able to get to the bottom if it soon! :'(
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Oh poor little Marley. It must be hard seeing her suffer. I was just wondering, for cystits in humans, you can take pottasium citrate, which i think makes the urine more alkaline, this can be bought from a pharmacy. You could ask your vet if it would be possible to give her this ? It might soothe her. Its given as a drink. Poor little thing, hope you get her sorted out soon. Maggie x
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Oh no :'( poor Marley. If she starts weeping blood again I would take her straight back to the vets. Harley sends big hugs and licks x
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti That does sound difficult. Maybe give the vet a call, explain that 2 weeks is too much to cope like this, and see what they can come up with?
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Oh that's awful.. I'd go straight back to the vets. You can't live like that for two weeks.
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti I had a very similar experience when my two were a similar age as Marley. They started with a urine infection at about 10 weeks. They had various antibiotics every 2 weeks for 6 weeks before the vet sent off a sterile sample. They had ecoli in their bladder and because the infection had gone on so long struvite crystals. The ecoli was treated with synulox a usual general antibiotic but for 6 weeks. They were put on royal canine urinary diet for the crystals. However I mixed this with their normal food half and half as the urine diet doesn't support growth. From my experience there is no reason why you should have to wait 2 weeks. If the symptoms are there again the antibiotics have worn off than the bacteria is there so can be tested. I'd be going back to the vet and insisting. Remember you are paying for the service. If the tests come back inconclusive then ok you might have to wait and do it again but I bet they don't. The longer the infection continues the worse the crystals can become which can then cause other problems. Good luck I know exactly what your going through Jen
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Oh poor little Marley, straight to the vet for me too, your little puppy should not have to put up with feeling so awful for another 2 weeks that is so unfair :'( I hope you get a vet that will help her. Let us know xx
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Sorry she's so poorly....I agree with everyone else,I'd be back at the vet and if I wasn't satisfied I'd be asking to see someone else ,let us know how you do x
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Hope you have managed to speak to the vet today for your poor wee girl.
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Poor little love, what a worry for you, keeping everything crossed that she is ok real soon x
Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Oh poor little baby. I would definately be on the phone with the vet demanding more treatment. She may just need a different type of antibiotic. We're you given any oral pain medication for her? I had some for one of Penny's UTIs and that stopped the frequent urination straight away because it relieved the discomfort. I would be pressing for pain meds too and for a sample to be sent away for analysis. As another poster said she may have something a bit more tricky to treat like ecoli. There are lots of preventatives you can do if you think your pup does have a recessed vulva. This is what Penny had but luckily we didn't have to do much to keep her infections at bay - I used holland and Barrett cranberry capsules (one twice a day) and added water to her food to make sure she was flushing out her system regularly. Does Marley have any yellow/whitish discharge from her vulva? If so he has a touch of puppy vaginitis which doesn't help the urine infections. Penny also had this. I just used a bit of warm water on a tissue to wipe her vulva after every urination to keep things clean. This may help too. I hope you get some relief and treatment for your baby!

Re: Marley/almost 12 weeks/still has uti Thanks everyone! Today is her 2nd full day on cranberry tablets. My vet was out today but I'm calling first thing to see if we really have to wait 2 weeks. I agree we just go ahead and collect the sterile sample if she could already see crystals in the office from the one I collected. Maybe the cranberry is helping a bit as today she has only had one accident inside while in her pen and I was napping after being up with a sick child during the night. So that one was my fault. yesterday she was trying to go all over the yard with nothing and today has had less frequency. I hate seeing little ones in pain. I don't think she has the vaginitis as I don't see any symptoms of that thankfully. But the good news is tomorrow she is 12 weeks and has gone from 7.6lbs at 8 weeks to over 16 pounds in a month. She was the runt of the litter and 5 pounds smaller than her 8 brothers. Thankful for all the great thoughts and advice. Julie in sunny Florida
