i read many post of young pups being greedy/hooligans,
jasper is not greedy, breakfast is served from 7 30, he picks at it,this as only started from going on adult food, his food can be in his bowl for over an hour , is this normal ?

when we are out and about, he as a perfect recall, no interest in the treats,.....walking back from our walk, after an hour off lead, he walks like a trooper, focused on me for his treats, :)
he as never been food motivated, he is now losing interest in jack pot treats , or any treats, what should i do ?

he is very placid, no way is he off the rails or an hooligan,
i do spend 24/7 with him,

I think you are just very lucky to have a quiet, patient, calm, gentle boy :)

My first Lab was the same. The current one, not so much :)

I agree with Rachael Lynne,I think you are just lucky he is a calm well adjusted boy.
Kate's Sam sounds the same to me so Jasper is certainly not abnormal,he's lovely :*
I have had an absolute hooligan on my hands this morning walking with my friend.....good grief,we looked an absolute mess :-[ She brought her ball thrower and Dexter went nuts when he saw it,jumping up,grabbing it in his mouth ,no response to drop whatsoever...thank goodness she knows him and that he is normally better behaved....a stranger would have been horrified.when it was time to put them on their leads,we put it in my back pack but the end was sticking out because it was so long....Dexter only jumped on my back, seriously ,like I was giving him a piggy back!........
So this week we've got a couple of things to work on,exposure to the ball thrower and a calm response ( I've got one somewhere)..... NOT jumping up and mugging my treat bag ( new behaviour that has crept in whenever he feels like it!)oh and I better get onto Amazon to order a new ball thrower for my friend,as her pristine piece of equipment is now embarrassingly scarred by my naughty boys teeth!!!
So Lynne, embrace the calm and enjoy your well behaved, well trained boy ;D you've done a great job with him x

Lynne not all Labs are greedy. Our Bess is but she has a friend across the road who is a very calm black lab, he isn't interested in treats and often leaves a little of his meal. Enjoy Jasper, does he still like cushions?

You can buy shorter 'ball chuckers", much easier to carry. I can't remember where I got mine unfortunately but it was a gundog site.

Nothing to worry about. Meg is nearly 14 now and she was very much like that as a pup and younger girl. She's never scavenged for food and even though she's just been diagnosed with Cushings she certainly wasn't looking for food before the diagnosis.

Murphy my old lab although he could get excited and had terrible recall he was very gentle and calm in most situations.

He was also a fussy eater. Liked treats but would happily leave the food in his bowl.

As he got older the calmer he got he lived to 15.

You can imagine the shock to my system Scott and scout were. They are complete hooligans. Obviously one winds the other up. They have improved a lot but you would never describe them as calm everything is mega exciting. Their food lasts about 2 minutes in the bowl. That's not an exaggeration I timed it. ::). They couldn't be more different to Murphy.

Enjoy jasper he's obviously a lovely dog but if you ever get another be prepared for it to be the complete opposite. ;)

    ;D ;D Rachael , too true ;D

My last Lab Tess was a heller as a puppy , a chewer , manic at times and downright naughty so it was with a degree of trepidation that we got solid Sam .
Dont get me wrong, he has his moments but I admit to taking him for a health check at my lovely patient Vets , purely because I thought he was too calm and so there had to be something wrong with him ::) ::)
Its the luck of the draw really , I did briefly think of having just one more Lab puppy but I just know that sods law would come into play and I would get a mad wild lunatic ;D ;D ;D ;D

You are just lucky I think, Lynne. Like Kate's Tess, Lady was an absolute nightmare when she was a pup, and at 4yrs old, on the food front she is still a nightmare. I've actually found her nose in my pocket more than once just sussing it out to make sure there are no treats remaining in there! ;D

when i hear the stories of labs stealing food, i started to think he was abnormal,......he as never stole food,......apart from his puppy antics i would say he is going to be a very calm boy,......my fence blew down last week, i was worried jasper might jump over the 10 inch panel that was left in the ground,.....he just bobs his head over to have a nosey, my fence even backs on to open fields , i thought he might just be lazy :)

Jasper sounds like a lovely calm and sensible boy, Lynne, I don't think you should be worried. We have to enjoy and celebrate whatever personalities our lovely puppies come with, and it would be boring if all dogs were the same.

I probably make too much of a fuss when Charlie is calm because we have to work so hard at it (good experience for the future cocker, I tell myself ::) slightly desperately ;D) and also because, if I'm honest, I'm ultra sensitive to any indication Charlie's rather narrow existence - he is really lucky if he gets new experiences twice a week now, when before our days were packed with them - make me worry he is being dampened down, and losing his hooligan confidence, which he really needs living in London. I honestly doubt a calm state is worth so much examination in normal circumstances!

I'd relax and enjoy the calm if I were you. Could do with a bit more of that around here... ;D ;D ;D

Re: is my boy abnormal being a lab

Aww, he sounds like a sweetheart!

I admit the reason I never had a lab before Phil is because of their energy. I've worked with dogs since I was 14 and the ones that stick out in my head are the crazy labs we had at the boarding kennels. I always said "No way, I will never have one of these beasts!" because they were climbing all over me, jumping, mouthy, etc. Friendly, but crazy! So even now with a lot more experience I have a funny taste about labradors. It makes me happy to see how they mellow out as they get older, and to read about naturally calm labs.

... now don't get me started on labradoodles. I am not a fan.... I work with them nearly every day and they're nice dogs but WAY too much energy for any sane person. ;D

the first 6 months, i was traumatised wondering what i had let my self in for, at one stage it was touch and go, i thought i would not cope with him, being my first ever dog,
he is almost 14 months ,
when out on a walk/run off lead,he is as fast as lightening,......when i am sat at home, he walks over to me like a little old man, jumps up on the settee and cuddles up to me, :)
don't get me wrong when a visitor arrives, he thinks they have come to see him, :)
its a pleasure to see how gentle he is with my 6 year old grandson,
