This came up on another thread and I had been wondering about it so thought I'd start a new topic. Do you all feed Large Breed dog food to your labs? When we first acquired Simba i began feeding him Large Breed as he is a lab/Newfoundland cross, and I figured he would get pretty big. However he is a year and a half now, and I don't think he's going to grow much more. He's perhaps a little taller than an average lab, but certainly within average weight. So, should I take him off Large Breed food?
Re: Large breed food? Hi Lisa, I think large breed, might be great danes st bernards newfoundlands mastiffs etc. But as your pooch is half newfoundland, your not really wrong, a labrador is a medium breed. Its confusing though, as some foods are just classed as adult. Im sure it hasnt done any harm, only if your dog starts to get overweight ? Sorry, Im no expert, Maggie x
Re: Large breed food? I don't know Lisa....Dexter's is just the 'Adult' version of the gastro diet he is on but before I got him settled on that the Royal Canin one was called Maxi Puppy....not sure if the Maxi pertained to Large breed dogs. It will be something about the protein content I think that controls the speed of growth.....Don't know a lot about it though,I think I've picked that up from one of Kate's posts when she changed Sam over?or maybe that was something to do with taking him off puppy food, sorry,I'm not much help am I x
Re: Large breed food? Barley being a pyrnean x has been on large breed food before due to his size and weight, topping the scales at 40.9kg. We have tried many different brands and flavours of food over the years with him, and several large breed foods. But what we found with barley is that he prefers normal adult kibble due to the size, he prefers small kibble, thats just him. When puzzle was on kibble, she had to be on fish4dogs large breed puppy as with the normal puppy kibble she would literally inhale it, with the large breed kibble the pieces were larger and made her chew and take smaller mouthfuls of food. I just think it is a matter of what suits your dog, every dog is different so will have different preferences and will be different shapes and sizes
Re: Large breed food? With large breed food it sometimes contains glucosamine, msm, collagen and chrodrin which has a lot of benefits for joints.
