My 6 year old bitch we rehoused in July has been fine up until yesterday she seamed quite strange sitting in the corner and not her usual playful self.

She did not want her dinner last night ( dry food) and she did not want any water either,

It's just not like here at all, I'm worried about her, when we got up today she seams a lot better drinking water and she had her breakfast (dry food) could it have been some icing of a cake one of the kids gave her that made her feel like this or am I just guessing

    Many thanks Simon

Firstly, welcome . Has she poo`d alright ? I`m wondering if she could have got hold of a toy or something of your childrens ? Either that or she has eaten something that has really upset her . Keep a very close eye on her, is she drinking ? As she has been sick, theres always a worry of dehyration, so if she cant keep water or food down today and doesnt pass a normal poo , I think I`d be ringing the Vet, just for peace of mind, please let us know how she is doing ? She is lovely by the way .

Hi Simon, and welcome to the forum :)

Is your bitch spayed or entire?
If she has never been spayed, has she been on heat in the last couple of months?

If so, please get her to the vet asap. Pyometra is common in older entire bitches that have recently been in season, and the only symptoms are often a bitch that is a bit 'off colour'.

If that does not apply, then 'what Kate said'. :) Hope she is feeling better soon.

    Pippa

Hi many thanks for the replies, I must have my email notification set up wrong as I've just noticed the replies.

She was off her food for just over a day and her poo was all fine she is now back to her normal self I'm very pleased to say.

Thanks again very much for your help and advice

I'd though I'd post in here rather than starting another new thread. Bella was very subdued on Monday evening and after a couple of hours was out on the patio being sick (several times over the course of the evening), the sickness is a creamy colour and very frothy. She's not eating and not drinking a great deal, but yesterday seemed to be perking up. This morning however on the walk we had a very runny poo and she's still not eating / drinking and has started being sick again.

She's 10 months old and yet to go on heat - is this a sign that she could be ? or is it something else ?

I don't know much about bitches on heat as we have a boy but if she hasn't been drinking for two days I think I'd pop to the vet to be on the safe side.

    Hope she's better soon :)

Me too. She's not a dog that bolts her food down anyway - but to not touch her food for 2 days is worrying. Vet appointment made.

My girls always lost their appetite a little when on heat, but the drinking stayed the same, good luck at the Vets , let us know .

Well took Hells Bells to the Vets, and she had a good look over her and deduced it was a virus, so a anti biotic injection and some probiotic paste later by the weekend Bella was all good - bouncing around (dropping half her coat on the floor in the process), eating & drinking and all was well in our world again.

However Monday - we've reverted back, not eating - spot of the runny tummy. We've got her eating boild rice, plain chicken and scrambled eggs, and we've managed to stop the frequent poo'ing. Could it be her food ? we accidently bought a different variety of the one she normally has (Beta), or perhaps I put her back on her normal food too soon and should have stuck with the eggs, chicken rice trio or is it that she is going through some hormonal changes and coming into season ? (10months old). In herself she seems fine though - walking ok - playful etc

This is so frustrating. I don't want to take her to the vet again unless I absolutely have too.

    Thoughts anyone ??

With luck it's just an upset tum, we do tend to think of our labs as walking dustbins - well, I do, Hoover too ;D

Usually 24 hours with no food but plenty of water does the trick, not always.

But from experience I'd suggest sticking with the bland food for a day or two and adding in some rough brown bread with a good dollop of honey, local if you can get it but any will do really. I swear by tree bark powders, slippery elm is best, you can get it from most health food shops and Holland and Barrett stock capsules. I usually use the powder, mix it with honey and some warm water until it resembles a gooey porridge (stir like fury it really will mix in!) or stir it into some yoghurt. For a lab I dose at one dessert spoon twice a day, you can spread it on the bread if she doesn't want it out of a dish. Cooled chamomile tea is a good settler too, most dogs will accept it, some will drink the whole lot so be careful she doesn't take too much water on board if trying this one.
If she's improving then start mixing her normal food back in gradually over several days until you're back to normal.
If she's still off it after a couple of days on the bland food then I think back to the vet would be best.

Got my fingers crossed for you.

When Riley had an upset stomach it actually took quite a while of bland food, probiotics (yoghurt once the vet supplied ran out) and Manuka honey. Hang in there cross fingers she recovers soon :)

I was given to understand that some dogs take a while to fully develop their immune systems, we probably went to our vet 4 times over a 2-3 week period. We weren't sure what caused it and there was the possibility that the stress of our new baby didn't help. We decided to change onto wheat free food to in case of intolerance but we never got as far as testing for intolerance or allergies.

    Good luck!

Really hope Bella will be better soon.

Kerryn you are a wonder with all things medical, what a great person you are to have on this forum, don't know what we would do without you. Hattie's pad healed in no time at all with your remedy. :) Helen x

    Helen, thank you, that's sweet. :-] (that's a blush)
I'm sure someone else would come along and give you the answers, it's what comes from being owned by multiple dogs over many years.
Good to know Hattie's paw healed up ok.

So what's next? hurl the next one in my direction. ;D
