Hi all, For those of you that use a crate for your dog when at home - what do you do when you take your dog on holiday? a) Fold-up the 'home' crate and take it with you. b) Have a special 'travel' crate (any suggestions?). c) Something else.

We used to have a specific crate which was made of material rather than metal which we intended to use when we go away, we tried it a couple of times but Murphy really didnt like it and wouldnt settle in so now if we go anywhere we fold up his home metal crate. I think if we spent more time getting him used to his travel crate he would have been ok but now weve discovered how easy it is just to fold up his normal one we just do that.
Re: Crate while on holiday We have previously folded up the home crate and taken it with us. Now it depends on the vibes from any cottage we rent (the usual for us rather than hotels and B&Bs). Sometimes her bed and beanbag are enough. If they have a "no dogs upstairs" rule and sound like they have a low tolerance on the pet front, we would possibly be more inclined to take it. When staying with my SIL she has it for respite from her dog and children (oops! hope she doesn't read this)
Re: Crate while on holiday We have done all of the above! Taken a 'traveling' crate, folded up the usual crate and taken it along, and finally, with a huge sigh of relief, just decided to take her normal doggie bed along and let her sleep in our room on holiday.
Re: Crate while on holiday We used to take Riley's metal house crate with us but we don't any more although I could still be tempted if we were going somewhere we had to be 100%
Re: Crate while on holiday We have our first trip with Max mid March. Off to a cottage in the lakes. We will be taking his metal crate. He's 5 months now. It is his first trip away so we will see... Mrs GreenBull is already worrying. Don't get her started on the camping trip coming up as that is a whole other pile of worry for her!
Re: Crate while on holiday I went camping with Murphy when he was only 14 weeks. We took his travel crate and had it next to us in the tent but he whined and howled so i ended up having him on the bed with us because I was so worried about him annoying the rest of campsite. I was then worried that this would mean he wouldn't settle in his crate in the kitchen when we got home but he was fine. He was really chilled at camping and just seemed to understand that the tent was home for the week. Have fun!
Re: Crate while on holiday I'd definitely take the crate camping. ;D Of course, you might end up with the food stored safely in it out of the dog's reach. There is nothing like that moment when you realise that the noise outside your tent in the middle of the night would appear to be your own dog... Clare

[/quote] She has taken a bit of training but she will now go voluntarily. Lots of treats and praise. She's an antipodean so a very expensive down sleeping bag rated to -25 helps. Plus a family sized tent.
Re: Crate while on holiday Always take the home crate. Always camped with the dogs and used the crate to prevent the night escapes. Never camped with Finley yet, weather not too good last year as we know :'( I have in the past left one of the dogs in the car as she hated anything to do with canvas. :
Re: Crate while on holiday We are heading off next week for a week so we will be taking the home crate with us. It folds up flat so really doesn't take up much space.
Re: Crate while on holiday They can rattle horribly in the car though....so some padding is good if you don't want to be driven completely crazy
