Taking Lady to see the vet on Monday to check out a limp. About 3 months or so ago she developed a pronounced limp noticeable by her "dropping" her left shoulder when she walked. I took her to the vet and he thought it was a sprained paw and prescribed an anti-inflamatory and rest. He checked her out for displasia and nothing evident. Well ever since then she has intermittently started to limp again. It's most noticeable in the morning when she gets up, but not all the time. Taking her back on Monday to get checked out again but most puzzling. Often she doesn't limp at all. Her paw isn't sensitive in any way. No sign of a problem when she's running and playing, but just trotting along beside me suddenly there it is again. Shoulder dropping and limping. I wondered if it could be habit from the way she walked when she had the sprained paw. Hmmm!
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Oh poor Lady , hoping all goes well on Monday David and that its nothing much , I dont suppose she has something stuck up under a nail does she ? Sam was limping a while ago and it was a tiny bit of gravel caught under the nail .
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Poor girl, Hattie had a small stone stuck in between her pads and she limped too. Really hope she will be OK David. Fingers and paws crossed here. Helen x
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Just double checked and no nothing stuck, although her right paw has one sensitive claw. Are they ticklish? I'd been looking at her left paw. Anyway we'll see. Thanks for the suggestions. Hands now well licked!
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Sounds almost as though she might have a touch of arthritis in her shoulder. If so, much sympathy from a fellow sufferer (me)...
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Ok just got back from the vet and it appears that the intermittent limp (she limps then recovers for a few days then limps again) might be a problem with one of her elbow joints. There is also signs of muscle wastage in her left shoulder indicating she is favouring one side over the other. The vet did mention the name of what it could be but I didn't make a note. Apparently it could be micro fractures in the sticky-out bone in her elbow joint that repeatedly heal and then open up again eventually leading to severe arthritis by around the age of 6 if not caught early and treated. Poor girl! She's booked in for x-rays next Tuesday and might need a scan as well. I gather if we are not too late it can be fixed with a spot of key-hole surgery but we're looking at around £2500 in specialist bills. More prevelant in dogs that are worked. She was VERY good as he manipulated her front leg quite severely. No signs of pain and she didn't bite him! She was even stoical when he did a spot of anal gland draining although they were actually ok. Got drops for a mucky eye at the same time (developed yesterday), and had her claws clipped. On the amusing side I apologised for the vague smell of fox pooh that I though might be on Lady or my dog walking fleece, but the vet thought it might be him. I was paying the bill when he stuck his head back out of the surgery door and said he'd tracked the pooh down and it was on his overall from a previous dog. ;D Fingers crossed - a bit worried as she's a lovely girl and we've just started to work together nicely as a team doing what we both like doing together. :-[
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Oh poor girl , I am sorry David, lets hope that the Xrays show that something can be done to help her .
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Awe poor Lady...I'm hoping it all turns out ok in the end. It kind of reminds of my sons condition on his hip joint. He is an ostiochondritis sufferer and is currently healing. The limp is only noticeable in the mornings after a long rest. Considering the amount payable if it is problimatic my fingers are also crossed for you and most importantly for Lady.
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Owner, one medium and one small black have paws crossed for a small black dog. This probably sounds daft, but my first lab had a stress fracture and we were recommended to feed her raw jelly - no I don't know either! But we did and it healed perfectly - I have no idea if it was the jelly or just time... Anyway, cod liver oil is proven to delay and reduce the affects of arthritis in people, no reason to assume it won't do the same in dogs, we all take ours every morning, we're great believers in gluosamine too, certainly reduced the healing time in my latest bust ligaments. Hello Labrina, I had osteochondritis too, but in my knees (post femur fracture) your son and you have my sympathies, I hope his calluses up nicely, I think hips mend well in the long term.
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Just another reason why McQueen is of such importance. Not only is he assisting my son by deterring rapid movement and keeping his mind occupied but also my mind. I certainly hope his hip does heal quickly as he was one of the youngest in the world. things are not going as well as expected but we can only try. Hence why this post triggered something of importance. Just how hard it is on any being when stuck with something causing them grief. Keep us posted on Lady please!!!
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp David, Hopefully the vet can do something for Lady. It is worrying as you say and sad that you may have to ease back on her working, which clearly you both love. Fingers crossed for Lady.
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp Hi Sharon. Yes and thank you. I started another thread on the subject of advice re elbow problems as it looks like she might have a long term problem. Now overloaded with info. ;D
Re: Lady has an intermittent limp poor Lady...me and the two pups also have fingers and paws crossed.....
