Met a lovely black labrador this evening. The only trouble was that it ran out in front of our car on the way to puppy training class for Harvey! Managed to avoid it and park safely before setting off on foot in pursuit (with the better half left in the car with Harvey). Eventually caught up with it (dogs are quick off lead even when meandering aren't they!) and fortunately it was very friendly and didn't object to me leading him back up the road by his collar. Unfortunately it was too dark to read the faded tag on his collar so I just knocked on the door of the house near where he ran out from - no luck but they thought there was a dog like that at the top of the road. So, off we set, black lab trotting along and me bent nearly double to keep hold of his collar - we must have looked a right sight! At the end of the road I knocked on the door again and although they weren't the owners of the dog they were incredibly helpful - they phoned the number on the tag (which could now be read in the light of their porch light), left a message when nobody answered, tried to find the address linked to the postcode on the tag (why don't people give their full address?!) using their ipad, and then called the phone number again and thankfully got an answer. The owner seemed pretty relaxed about the whole thing and blamed his wife and daughter because they were supposed to be watching the poor dog while he was playing squash. Apparently the dog had escaped from their back garden. Anyway, to be fair to him he turned up in his car within 5 minutes to collect the dog and that was that. I thanked the couple that had helped and, after running back down the road, set-off for class (for which we were late but at least we felt good about doing the right thing - would have felt dreadful if we subsequently read that the poor dog had been run over by another motorist). Thank goodness the dog had it's collar on while in the back garden. I must admit we don't always have Harvey's on in the back garden but this might make me think again. Night all.
Re: Lost and found Wow, what an eventful night you've had Glad you managed to get the dog reunited with its family (even though they were relaxed about it!!). I would of been devastated and frantic :-\ Glad to hear there are people out there who do stop to help
Re: Lost and found Well done on your good deed I hope the owner thanked you fervently when they arrived to pick up the dog.
Re: Lost and found Oh well done you! You handled that very well. Good luck for that dog that it was you and you stopped to help.
Re: Lost and found Well done. Good deed for the week at the very least. If my dog ever goes missing I really do hope we have thoughtful people like you around yo help.
Re: Lost and found I mentioned an old friend, retired vet, on another post and he said dogs should always wear collars with name and address on as many dogs got lost in the evenings from owners' gardens. I always take my dogs' collar's off when we come back from a walk, maybe I should keep them on!! Well done for all the trouble you and the other house owner went through, though annoying when the owner didn't seem all that concerned!
Re: Lost and found We had a similar occurrence last summer - an elderly female lab sauntering down our street. Luckily she had her collar on, and I was able to reconnect her with her very relieved owners within a very short period of time! I've put my mobile number on Poppy's collar now, as should she ever go missing on a walk (heaven forbid), I'd most likely be out looking for her, not at home waiting by the phone…
Re: Lost and found Well done to you UB , its horrible to see a dog out alone , so pleased that this had a happy ending
Re: Lost and found Good for you UB saving the day and the dogs life and really glad the owners were grateful. xx My daughter and I pulled over and caught 2 young Labradors running on a main road that very nearly caused an accident, like you knocked on lots of doors and eventually found the owner who looked at us like we were dirt, took the Labs moaned at her husband for letting them out and shut the door in our faces without even a thank you, but at least the dogs were safe. Some people

I'm such a drama though aren't i!!! ... I've 'found' 4 dogs now wandering the park so I carry a spare lead now. I've was a particularly nasty spaniel, when I got it back home the owner shouted at me for coming through her back garden ( from where it had escaped!!) and didn't seem that bothered that 1. It had escaped and 2. It was back !!!! Despite the owners lack if concern you did a good thing and I would always do the same , it would be the only way to live with myself xxx
Re: Lost and found i have a bag just for dog walks its surprising how much you need treats poo bags clicker etc and always have a spare lead we often come acroos dogs on thier own in the woods
Re: Lost and found Good idea My version is my ancient multi-pocketed barber waistcoat and, yep, all sorts of might-wants get stuffed into it
