Didn't realise how bad our lawn has suffered with all the rain, dog paws and wee wee. Don't know why I haven't done it sooner, there is a patch of grass outside our front lawn which she could use! So it's time for sneaking out front in my PJs! How often do your dogs ask to go out between walks? I think because I am home with her most of the time she probably goes out more than she needs too. She often is asking for out and not doing anything.
Re: 1 year too late... Oh tell me about it Jade , our " lawn " is like a sponge in some parts , shocking : : Our two go out for the first time at around 7.30 a.m. then a good off lead run at around 8.30 . If the weather is good, the back door stays open so I guess they wee when they want to but if its not nice outside, the door stays closed, they might ask to go out around lunchtime . Second walk is around 3.p.m. and they dont ask to go out again until late evening , just before bed . I`ve given up on the kitchen floor : :
Re: 1 year too late... Lilly is a camel. Once on morning walk (ha ha actually about 16 little ones : ) around 7am. And often she wont go out when Sophie gets in at 3.45 and hangs off til after 5pm or even teatime at 6.30. She MAY decline to go out before bed. Never asks out at night only if she rarely has a dodgy tum. She is not a big drinker although gets fresh water 2 or 3 times a day freely available and we always give her a good puddle of water in with her food. I know the latter is not usual for adult dogs bit she needs to get fluids somehow! So all in all...not a lot!
Re: 1 year too late... She will only go if I am in the garden with her, even if she is (rarely) out on her own. (Can see her from house) she won't go. And nothing for hubby either so he has actually given up taking her out if he is back before me!
Re: 1 year too late... I dug up the lawn and laid gravel down on top of weed suppressing mat. Sorted. Charlie tanks his water bowl 3 or 4 times a day, and pees a lot. We work on out every 3 hours and he pees on command - but if he doesn't really want to go, he just does a dribble then waits for his 3 kibble payment. If he needs to go, niagra falls! It's handy, because we've always done this, even at one year he goes out with someone, and pees first. So he empties himself in one or two goes in the garden - I so need this when I'm working as can't hang around waiting, and my dog walker is able to only do a flying visit sometimes. He doesn't go in the garden but to pee first - out, pee, reward (then free time when not injured). No pee, no reward - but he hasn't not peed since he was little, months ago. So never asks to go out unless he needs a pee. I know this sounds like a faff, but we were still in this routine at 9 months, then carried it on when he was injured, so we reckon we'll just stick with it now. Plus, he is intact, so we want "pee outside" very, very, firmly embedded in him.
Re: 1 year too late... Both my boys will not go in the garden. My last bitch died just before Christmas and the lawn that has survived 30 years being urinated on, now looks very sad, the worst ever, it obviously misses the bitches pee! The boys go down the lane at about midday and have their first pee, then a walk in the afternoon of about an hour to an hour and a half so their last pee is about 4.45 and they don't go until midday the next day!!
Re: 1 year too late...
so their last pee is about 4.45 and they don't go until midday the next day!!
19 hours! How is that possible?
Re: 1 year too late... The DivaDog - - will only pee and poo once per day however often she is given the opportunity ....never come across it before and it explains our total failure trying to house-train her as an adult when we first had her. It's all very well knowing you (I) should stay with her in the garden at regular intervals but it was for such a looooong time we often gave in and returned indoors. We know she was kept in a 'kennel' (big cage) for her first 3+ years and bred from her first season. I wonder if she was perhaps let out once a day and her body tuned itself to that rather than soil her small space?
Re: 1 year too late... I sometimes wonder if Dexter is house trained : ;D we never have any accidents but as we've always taken him out every 3-4 hours so I wonder if he really knows to sit at the door to ask. he won't wee on the garden either...a result of him being dog sat for 2 weeks around the time he started cocking his leg,his dog minder used to walk him across the road to a tree and he would go straight away ....I've not done anything to change that but I will do this week as the temps are creeping up so it's not ideal. He wees on his 5.30 walk....about 10 mins into it.again at 10.30,we take him at 2.30 and then he goes again on his walk at 5 pm.he does his last one at 9.30 ,2/3 poos a day....I think he drinks plenty of water, always at least 2 water bottles on his walks and he has a bit from the bowl through the day....not as much as Chocolate Chsrkie though ! X
Re: 1 year too late... Pongo is 14 weeks now and still not reliably house-trained (mainly because he doesn't know how to ask to go out). But the routine is: One massive wee first thing when we let him out of his crate and take him into the garden. During the day he has at least a dozen wee's. Either he sits by the door (so we dash over and open it); or he goes while walking round the garden with us. He knows he gets a treat every time he goes so I'm quite sure he now saves it up so he can just give a little dribble each time and get more treats that way. He always looks over his shoulder to check that we're watching before he goes. I swear I can see him thinking 'well this seems a stupid game to me, but whatever keeps them happy....'. He may not be house-trained, but he's trained us pretty well.
Re: 1 year too late... Julie T, I wondered that as well! We have a dog door so that they can go out at will, but they won't urinate in the garden. We had a special area of the garden made as a dogs' loo, the GSPs used it but the Labs refuse. The one good thing is there are no brown patches on the lawn and no brown patches on the shrubs!
Re: 1 year too late... I am currently not speaking to her. She started wanting us up at 5:30. Left her until 6:00, took to to said grass area out the front. No pee pee!!!! But tried a puppy like jump up and chew the lead. Has been whiny for the last 45 minutes, not sure if it's for breakfast or to go in garden!
Re: 1 year too late... At 7 she had her breakfast then straight out on the public grass for a toilet trip. Now I know to ignore her for a bit longer in the morning!
