Re: What is it with this dog of mine????? Just for you, Rachael - You can see some of the little guys are just starting to develop. There are eight more clumps in the pond, with the newts starting to look very hungry… The amorous frog couples have left the small pond, and there is just one more male chirruping and whirring in the big pond. I call him Lonely Tony.

One of the places we train in during the summer is beside a lake and at a specific time there are thousands of tiny frogs on the paths and it is so difficult trying not to tread on them. Do ducks eat tadpoles? What would the natural predator be for baby frogs as surely all these cannot reach adulthood?

EVERYTHING eats tadpoles, Stacia, they are the staple diet for newts, grass snakes, many sorts of birds including ducks, fish - and yes, apparently labradors too… Each frog couple lays hundreds of eggs, but only a couple of those will actually make it through to breeding age at around 4 years old.

I try to move as much spawn as possible from our big fish pond into the small one because the fish do eat it and also eat emerging taddies, but we must be very lucky , we end up with hundreds of baby froglets every year : The noise in our garden in the evenings has to be heard to be believed, they are very vocal , these frogs of ours , wishing I had newts
