Has anyone else noticed their dog is moulting? Poppy has an incredibly thick undercoat, and seems to moulting huge amounts of fur. I wonder if it is due to the warm winter weather? Foolish, if so - the winter is by no means over yet!

Lady seems to moult continuously. Huge drifts of hair all over. Her undercoat seems to moult every couple of weeks or so as seen on her brush.

No extra moulting here, Charlie's coat not as dense as a Labs coat more Pointer I think - lucky me! Hattie moults so very little it's great!! :D Helen x

Bella is moulting by the clump load at the moment - 15-20 mins worth pf brushing a day and it's still coming out by the handful !

It doesn't make sense to me though - why do they moult in the winter? Surely it would be of more use to them to moult in the spring???

Rocket moults twice a year - sometimes so fast she gets temporary bald patches. Fills the Dyson twice a day - no kidding.

The rest of the time she doesn't shed much at all!

I guess the thing is, its been very mild. I have daffodil's sprouting in the garden and my pond plants are showing some new shoots. All in for a shock this week !

Well the ground is frozen, we have snow and sub-zero temperatures here as of last week, so I think she'd better stop moulting if she doesnt want to be a very cold little girl!!!

Bella's still moulting by the truckload. Surprised she isn't totally hairless by now.

    Re: Moulting?

I've decided mine are odd - they don't moult. Maia has tufty bits that I can pluck out but I rarely get much on the brush from either of them.
My first lab had a triple coat, so deep you could sink your hands in it, when she moulted she started from her nose and it ran down her back making her a dog of two halves for several weeks lovely and shiny in front and moth eaten behind with a Shirley Bassey off the shoulder dress half way through ;D. Brushes couldn't cope so I stripped her out like a terrier leaving great swathes across the garden, Mum threatened to spin it into yarn and knit us a puppy!

Came into the lounge, thought we'd acquired a new puppy!

Turns out it was Lizzie who'd rolled around and picked up all the hair off the carpet I'd intended to hoover today (honest!)

Well I've found something that really seems to help, it's a kind of comb called The Furminator - pulls dead undercoat out like nothing you've ever seen! Expensive, but goodness it seems to have done the trick!

    Re: Moulting?

I use one of those on Hattie's coat as she has such a thick coat and it's brilliant but I was told not to use it on Charlie as the removal of the undercoat is not good for Labs, something to do with insulation in water and cold weather. Might be worth checking with a Groomer or Vet. I just brush him now. Helen x

    Re: Moulting?

I know Helen, and I won't use it except when she is moulting so terribly. I just used it once on her, and it pulled all the dead hair out - she still has a good thick undercoat, but is not shedding any more so it gets my vote! :) :) :)

I think you said Charlie doesn't really have an undercoat, right? Billy was like that - he was a lab/Brittany spaniel cross, and had no undercoat at all, which was good from a moulting point of view, but he did feel the cold. When we came back from a wet winter walk I used to have to bundle him up in blankets to stop him shivering!

    Re: Moulting?

Don't blame you if it helps great :) Charlie doesn't seem to have much of an undercoat and he still doesn't feel the cold even when he comes out of the river and in from the snow, rescue dogs hard as nails!! ;) x
