Now for barley this has to go in this category He is an absolute nightmare with claw clipping. He fights, he growls, he howls and he bites. He has to be muzzled when he has them done which is once in a blue moon which makes it even more difficult to cut them as they need cutting back a lot. i have tried and tried desensitising him to them, he can paw the clippers, touch the clippers, i can stroke his feet with the clippers all with his cooperation and no fighting, but as soon as it goes click and cuts his nail thats it, he is a different dog, nothing makes it better, bribing him with cheese or bacon, nope still wants to bite anyone who dares cuts his claws (usually me as dad is stronger than me and is trying his best to restrain him) we have had the vest do it before but it took them over 1/2 hour to do them and even then they did not get all of them done, lucky we were the last patient of the evening so we did not keep people waiting. His claws need cutting regularly as he does not get them worn down by road walking as he does not get many walks or only gets short ones. They grown very quickly and at this moment in time are very long and the quicks are starting to grown down. He was going to get them done when he was due his x-ray but that never happened, and probably will not happen for some time yet, and it will be too long by then to have them done under anesthetic
Re: Claw clipping You could try gently filing them every day with an emery board? Perhaps have the vet do it once more and then keep it up with the filing. I have a friend who does this with his Lab as she is only walked over fields.
Re: Claw clipping We have a nail file and grinder, i can use the file on him but so far only on his dew claws, we have been working but not making any progress/ He won't let me use the claw grinder on them either, he is such a difficult dog And because his claws are so long at the moment it will take ages to file them all down and most likely by the time i have finished them all the first one will need doing again. he also has very brittle claws which break easily which is why they are better being short so there is less nail to split off
Re: Claw clipping Annabelle, I can totally commiserate with you on this on. Alice is an absolute diva when it comes to nail clipping. Two things have worked for me. I have made a scratch board for her out of a one inch thick piece of plywood with some sanding paper nailed to it. I then clicker trained her to scratch her front paws on he board. This works really well and she loves doing it. So that leaves the back paws. For that we have a different approach. My husband cuts her nails while I hold her and squeeze either primula cheese or whipped cream into her mouth to distract her and appease her. Works amazingly well! ;D
Re: Claw clipping I have just seen a very good you tube clip from kikopup about relaxing the dog, putting it on its back and then clipping the claws. It may help, who knows, but anything is worth a try instead of having to fight the dog. : but yes, Primula cheese... The very best invention for dog training / pacifying
Re: Claw clipping I just trim Mollie's with people nail clippers when she's asleep! Takes 3 minutes and I'm done, and she's none the wiser when she wakes up...
