An excellent article which coincides with the recent media discussion about understanding BMI and the simpler alternative of the tape measure. Clearly the affluent countries of the world have a problem with obesity in humans which is now reflected in overweight pets. I am conscious of the problem, control Benson's input of food, ensure he is well-exercised and regularly check his weight. I was horrified to see the overweight photographs of Labradors being shown at AKC events and I would have thought that these dogs weighed considerably more than the breed standard of 30kgs? Benson is a classic show dog without an ounce of fat on him and weighs in at a healthy 35kgs, a weight that has been constant for the past 3 years.

Glad you liked it Roger. I'm hoping Kate will be a regular contributor. She writes well and does her research. :)

Very interesting article, thank you :) it is appalling that there are so many obese dogs out there in this day and age!!

Been told off by our Vet that Jake is a little overweight he is 31kg and should be about 28-29kg , As his weight has slowly crept up with feeding him raw meat bones whilst out at work to help with his separation anxiety .

We were not aware of their high calorie content but are now addressing the issue with reduced kibble feed .

Very interesting article indeed , I always assumed the show bred lab with the likes of the Crufts winners was a much more barreled shaped dog , Were as the Gundog/retreiver lab was of more slight build . Mike
