Cant beleive how quick it has gone. He turns 6 months old on april 3rd! I have 2 questions. .. At 6 months should we reduce his food to twice a day? At the moment he has arden grange 150g in morning 150g lunchtime and 100g at 6pm Next question can we now take him on longer walks? At the moment he has 2 x 20-30 min walks a day

Yes and yes Slowly reduce Neros lunch meal adding what he would have had to his breakfast and tea , do this over a month until he is free of a lunchtime meal , although I must admit that Sam loved his lunch so much that he still has a tiny handful of kibble and he will soon be three years old : Are his walks on soft or hard ground ? if soft, then yes he can have longer off lead now, if its hard ground on lead then increase only very slowly

Re: Nero is 6 months next week! it should be fine to reduce his lunch meals until there is nothing anymore for lunch. Puzzle got moved to 2 meals earlier than 6 months with no complications but we had issues with giving her lunch on time every day. if most of the walk is on soft ground you can increase it, but not so much on hard ground as this puts strain on the joints. Increase the time slowly so he has time to adjust and build up his fitness levels and keep an eye on him, if he starts to look more tired after walks or start to struggle on them reduce them down again until he is happy to go for longer walks.
Re: Nero is 6 months next week! Yesterday we discovered he has learnt a little trick on his own...how to open doors! If he is outside and wants to come in he jumps up and pulls the door handle to open it! Anyone else had a lab do this?

Re: Nero is 6 months next week! no not got that here, jasper just sits at the back door for me to open it, even when i am not in sight, never vocal, no sound from him, just sits there looking at the door......dont no what he wants to go in the garden for as he will not do toilet in the garden

[/quote] Walking on hard ground hurting young joints? I can see why the increased shock of jumping on hard ground might be harmful, but walking on hard ground? I've heard this lots... I asked the orthopedic surgeon, and specialist vet about this. They said no difference between walking on hard or soft ground and indeed very soft ground (soft sand) can be a strain on muscles. But walking on hard ground won't hurt young joints (or indeed a very injured, as in Charlie's case, joint). I wonder, since this advice is repeated so often, if there is any references for it? I don't mean this to be a challenge - I mean it to be questioning and inquiring.
