Our garden is full of rabbits, and therefore FULL of rabbit droppings. Our 16 week pup Pongo thinks these are caviar. I shudder to think how many he gets down his gullet each day. Is there any reason I should worry about this or is it normal labrador dustbin behaviour? I'm hoping he'll get over it as he has got over most of his various puppy obsessions over the past few weeks. (I've no idea how I would stop him in any case - short of having him permanently on a lead) Any views? Thanks
Re: Rabbit droppings I wouldn't worry too much. I have two rabbits and Penny loves feasting on rabbit poo, it's her favourite snack! Since rabbits only eat grass etc there's nothing in their poo that could cause an issue. It's just a nasty habit.
Re: Rabbit droppings I try to stop Charlie eating rabbit poo on the common - this is because I think of wild rabbits as carrying all sorts of parasites, worms and other nasty things. Whether that's true or not though I'm not sure. (I'm sure domestic rabbits might be different). I have one strategy, which is to massively reward with handfuls of sea biscuits for leaving poo. It works for everything apart from fox (no eating, just rolling) and horse (which is obviously better than sea biscuits).
Re: Rabbit droppings My puppy Buddy likes to eat some and roll in some- double the joy for him! I did read somewhere that female labs were more prone to this- but my little chap would race any dog to find the rabbit poo first!
Re: Rabbit droppings Tatze adores horse poo - if she finds a steaming pile you'd think she'd found a ham sandwich the rate she hoovers it up! I now preempt this by having tasty treats to feed her as we walk past the poo. It's now got to the stage where she sees horse poo and looks to me for treats - hurrah!
