So barley has been coming on in leaps and bounds lately, he is like a different dog. He is back on normal walks with no limping during or afterwards which is great, we still take it easy on him on difficult ground. He has got his wonderful flowing trot back with his head and tail held high, so very pleased. Last week i started doing some muscle building exercises with him to get him fit and ready for when we start going to fun shows starting in 2 weeks time, and getting ready for holiday in the summer when we usually do lots of walking. We slowly built his exercise up, and he is on around 1 30 min road walk a day now, longer if we go round the park as he has a good sniff and just ambles about. This week i have just started running him again, just short gentle jogs at the moment as he is full of energy and wanting to do more but not pushing him to far to fast, just a comfortable speed for around 30 sec- 1 min with a warm up and down walk and stretching. He is full of energy at the moment, which is strange to say that about barley the grumpy lazy dog. We did have a flare up of allergies a week or so ago but that seems to have settled down now after adjusting his pills. He has put on weight and is now 41kg but most of the extra weight is muscle that he has built up from longer walks. It is so nice to not have to worry so much about him anymore, i still worry but not as much as things have settled down a lot now and seem to be under control. He is also a lot happier in himself which is greatto see him with a smile on his face
Re: Update on barley So happy Barley is well in himself, you've done brilliantly looking after him ;D
Re: Update on barley We are going to discuss with the vet when he has his booster about him having x-rays as we have been doing a lot of thinking about it and have come up with 3 options to choose from: 1. Just get his hips and shoulders x-rayed with possibility of having to have other joints x-rayed later on if nothing is found 2. Get all of his back leg joints done now then at the next available time get all his front leg joints done, so 2 general anesthetics 3. Bite the bullet and make a big hole in dads wallet and get all his joints on all legs done all at once to rule everything possible out and see which joints are/were affecting him, with a payment plan worked out with the vets to cover all the costs I prefer option 3 as it will only include one GA and will get everything done at once and give a clear indication of what state his joints are in. If all goes well he could get them done next week
Re: Update on barley Glad to hear that he is back in good spirits Always so good to see them healthy and happy.
Re: Update on barley Glad to hear this, Annabelle! I hope it continues and that you will have a lovely summer with him!
Re: Update on barley That sounds great Annabelle! I guess your vet will maybe guide you in which xrays would be appropriate. Hope all stays well
