Not a nice thing to come across, do not feel guilty for your actions.
IMO you did the right thing, most likely would have done a similar action.
    He has forgotten it now.
I think if it was me, I would have gone back the same spot with him on the lead and see his reaction, if he did not want to go near your actions were proved correct.
It would also give you chance to correct him and reward him at the spot, if he showed interest.

    Question,
How would you stop your dog sniffing a dead creature? After all it is in their nature to scavenge.

If it had been one of my older dogs (which have been trained to retrieve game dead and alive) she might have brought it back, although we don't get many cats to retrieve.

Yes, we get the odd mishap in the shooting field, usually when a bird has been badly shot (loads of blood and guts) Sorry for the description.
You mainly find this in older dogs that have had many years in the field, they may find an old relic (bird shot weeks earlier) and start chomping on it.
Difficult to rectify, just accept it and move on.

Oh gosh it does make you feel horrible when you shout at them like that doesn't it? But I'll bet you he won't go near that dead cat again! Sometimes it takes something like that to really drum it into them that what they're doing is the worst thing ever! Don't beat yourself up too much, we've all had times like it, and they forgive us eventually... The chicken helps :)

Amy found some ribs yesterday, I knew they where quite big so she couldn't gulp them down. She picked then up and had a dance around with them. I managed to recall her, didnt try to get the ribs but managed to put her on the lead so she couldn't run off again. She dropped them, and I let her take them back as a reward. (knew she couldn't gulp with been so big. Totally different story if it was a small thing I know!). After a little walk to the bin asked for a drop again and ribs went in the bin. Phew!
