I have been reading up on Coconut oil and it seems that is good for dogs who have low immunity, itchy skin etc, which is Ruby!

I have found a dosage which says 1/4 tsp for every 10lbs. So at 27 kg it would make it about 1.5 tsp for Ruby.

For those who use it, does this sound about right ? Also do you use it every day ?

Ruby currently has Yumega Plus, should I stop that or use both ?

    Thanks

    Chloe

I got some for Sam , for boosting his immune system when he suffered from canine acne as a youngster . It smelt divine but thats about all , no improvement at all I`m afraid , but I did find a massive improvement when I changed his food to wheat free :)

I use it for cooking, but have not fed it to dogs. This article is quite interesting and has a few links to other sources.

    Thanks Kate.

I already feed grain free. Just always looking for natural ways to help even more and keep her skin and coat the best it can be. Have found on Internet some very positive things but would like to confirm with a regular user.

Thanks for the article on tail docking Pippa. My wcs isn't docked because she wasn't going to a working home and so far, touch wood, it is still in one piece even if it does get pulled through brambles etc!!

I've fixed the link, I clearly haven't mastered 'copy and paste' on my iPad yet :)

I find coconut oil interesting - quite apart from the fact that it smells amazing - there is a study here that showed coconut oil (applied rather than eaten) having a beneficial effect on children with mild dermatitis. And another one here that shows an antimicrobial effect on the dreaded C Difficile. And one on arthritis in rats Sadly, I've found nothing yet on dogs.

The main drawback of using coconut oil in any quantities, seems to be its price. It is very expensive!

    Thanks for these Pippa.

I have bought some from Amazon (£9.95) and the jar is huge so at around a teaspoon a day I think it could last a while! My dogs cost me a fortune anyway but they are worth it !

Ruby also has terrible problems with her pads cracking and scuffing really easily and I think the coconut oil will help with this too.

As Pippa says , it is good for cooking , I use it in curries , its also supposed to be good as a (human ) hair conditioner, very versatile stuff :)
