What to do?! I have just had a litter from my black lab, I have kept 2 boys, madness I know. I'm 99% sure on getting the boys done, but do I get my bitch spayed? Do I have another litter in a year? Would just like some opinions! X

How old is your girl now ? Really, she shouldnt be having another litter in one years time, better two but then its dependent upon her age now as its generally best not to breed over the age of 6/7 years . The other point is that of finding really good homes for the pups as more and more end up in rescue centres through no fault of their own . If you decide not to have another litter , I would certainly spay if it were my bitch , if only to protect against uterine infections which can be deadly .
How old are your pups now ? My goodness, they are going to keep you on your toes , in the nicest possible way of course :)

Well, one thing's for sure, if you have a bitch and two males, SOMEONE's going to have to get fixed!!

Personally, I would say your bitch has probably done her bit, and would get her spayed, for the reasons Kate has posted. The stories about pyometra are so scary, if she were mine it would be an easy decision.

I know my golden retriever had a pyo, the only reason she wasn't spayed was due to heart condition and they didn't think she'd make an operation luckily she did when she needed it. Boys are going to be done, the bitch is only 3yrs old, so just trying to decide whether or not too have another litter, her last litter were easy to sell, most have gone to friends or by word of mouth, we've always said if they have problems with dog or themselves that we would prefer they contact us and we will re home the dog over a rescue centre.
