i have just been to my local market and was appalled to see how many people had left the dog in the car is is very warm here west sussex and one dog had obviously bee left for sometime what is the best thing to do can the rspca be contacted on sundays any ideas please

Re: dogs left in cars If the dog is in distress, I'd call the RSPCA or the police, and wait for them to arrive, and be prepared to face up to the owner. Be careful not to over react though. Now the back of my car is full of dog crate, which I can lock, I can leave Charlie with the car and crate locked, and the boot open. I was told the other day "you are not going to leave your dog in that car are you?" The boot was open, the car was in the shade, it's April and no hotter than 18 degrees, and I was going to be 10 minutes and have the car in sight the whole time. Yes, I left my dog in the car...

Re: dogs left in cars I would definitely call police. It makes me so angry. Quite a few years ago we took meg to vet for her yearly jabs. It was June and really hot. We had an early appointment and on the way back, hubs wanted to call into B&Q. When we got there, he went into store and I stood in shade with megs. A mother and grown up daughter walked past and accused me of being irresponsible for bringing megs out in the heat. I told them that far from being irresponsible we had just taken megs for her jabs, it was early morning and I was standing in shade with her. I've never seen 2 people walk away so fast.
Re: dogs left in cars It is simple. If YOU don't fancy sitting in a car with a fur coat on, don't expect your dog to enjoy it. Police or RSPCA is the obvious answer. I think people often under estimate the warmth of Spring sunshine.
Re: dogs left in cars I ended up putting a parasol over Lola yesterday cause it was so warm. Dread to think how a dog would have felt in a stuffy car! If you're unable to do as Julie did, getting lots of fresh air in, then you shouldn't take your dog with you. No errand is so important that you essentially suffocate your dog.
Re: dogs left in cars Sit in the boot of your car and you will really feel how hot it is. Would you leave a baby/child in the car? I wouldn't hesitate in reporting anyone to the police for this as it's just damn cruel and makes my blood boil If you are going to do some errands why not leave your dog at home in the cool.
Re: dogs left in cars I forgot I had no money for training the other day and it was pretty warm so while I went to the cashpoint I left the car boot open - yay for lockable crates!

Re: dogs left in cars Police are not help. Long story short, dogs in hot car at dog show, car park attendants trying to shade car with their coats, tannoy message sent three times and no response. Policeman fetched, he said he couldn't do anything, I asked a bystander to fetch a hammer to break the window, policeman said illegal to do it, dogs highly distressed, bystander smashed window! Policeman said he would be prosecuted for breaking window!

Re: dogs left in cars Here's ours from TransK9, I'm very pleased with it. In an ideal world I'd have liked more head height for Riley but it does encourage him to lay down and sleep when travelling which is a good thing I think. However he has perfected a slouch so that he can look out of the gaps when travelling if he really wants to watch the world go by. It's still warmer in the crate with the boot open than out in the shade somewhere but it's a LOT better than just in the car with the windows open a bit. You can also get fans to attach to the front grill but I don't have one of those yet.
Re: dogs left in cars It doesn't really have anchor points but I've put a strap over it at the back which isn't in this picture. Additionally it's on a non-slip mat which protects the bumper and Riley's claws from getting caught as he gets in and out. I've also left the dog guard in place so now all the dummies, boots and bags go down the side of the crate and if we were to have an accident the dog guard would stop everything flying into the passenger compartment. It's a bit belt and braces but I wanted to prevent stuff flying round Lizzie as well as make Riley safe.
