Hi all, My 5 month old pup has sticky eyes, or sleep or whatever you might call it. It is not terribly bad but enough for me to be wiping it every few hours and a fair bit on a morning. It is white / pale yellowy. Now, if this was my kids I'd be thinking conjunctivitis and popping down the chemist for some eye drops. Is this the same for dogs? I don't really want to pay for a vets visit & probably more expensive eyedrops if they are essentially the same thing. I've bought some drops, the active ingredient is chloramphenicol, brand name is Brochlor. Anybody used "human" drops before? Have any idea what the vet would prescribe? I did phone the vet but they told me they prescribe different drugs for different things so its impossible for them to say. For further information they would recommend a vets visit!! Ta.
Re: sticky eyes Just to add I did tell the chemist the drops were for a dog and he seemed to think this was fine.
Re: sticky eyes Go to the vets and get your dog's eyes checked out. You can note what is prescribed and if it is something you can buy over the counter then you can get that next time. Labs do tend to get what I call 'gunky eye' quite a bit, because of their love of water and mud. Mostly it's pretty harmless, and sometimes you can get rid of it with camomile tea, but if it persists and the eye is red with a yellow/white discharge I would certainly go to see the vet.
Re: sticky eyes I had Chloromycetin eye ointment for my pup who picked up an eye infection from another dog. I used to work for a vet and this was used there. Don't tell the chemist it is for your dog as they are not allowed to sell it to you! Say it is for your Mother, Father, Sister etc! However, I wouldn't "muck" around with eyes, so if pup gets worse, do see the vet. Stacia
Re: sticky eyes Sam had conjunctivitis when he was a youngster , our Vet said to try bathing with cooled used tea bags for a few days alongside the anti biotic ointment he prescribed, it was cleared up in no time . I agree though, Labs do tend to get mucky eyes from all the foraging about that they do, but if it looks sore and red , i`d always go to the vet, hope its better real soon x
Re: sticky eyes Lilly almost always gets weepy eyes after a trip to the beach, and although we got the chloramphenicol from the vet the first time (it co-incided with a check-up) we have just bathed them since and they have settled no problem. Just for interest, the majority of human eye infections are caused by viruses, and we overuse antibiotic drops, and most will respond well just to lubrication - like carbomer/hypromellose gel. I don't know enough about veterinary medicine (or dogs!) to know its the same in dogs though. I guess just as with humans, if something looks worse rather than better after "self-treatment" you don't hang about getting advice from an expert. jac
Re: sticky eyes thanks guys, doesn't look sore, just the sticky goo really. have been bathing throughout the day with cooled boiled water....if no better tomorrow to the vets with us
Re: sticky eyes Sersi, Charlie has had a couple of nasty sticky eyes and needed the Vet who said you should never ignore eye problems as it can be much more of a problem than it appears.. She could of course just be saying that who knows. Very expensive for us as Charlie has to be slightly anaesthetize as he is so nervous to even be there and won't let the vet examine him. : Hope he will be OK. Helen x
