Hi guys, I tried take Zulu out for a walk every morning and every evening. In the mornings, around 5:30am, I try take him for a walk down the road, but he doesn’t seem to want to walk further than our property. He seems quite happy staying on the property and sniffing around the shrubs. Does this count as walking? When I try get him to walk, he tries everything not walk further than our property. Is there a reason this this? Cheers, Robbie
Re: Walking your puppy Hello Robbie, We didn't walk out puppy till 4-5 months , The backyard play was sufficient for him . They say every month add 5 mins to his walks . Also a puppy doesn't need a leash walk like a Dog . if he doesn't move past Ur property may be cause he recognizes his area . Entice him with food / toys etc . Let him off leash if possible . Pups tend to follow you when they younger and will also help you in recall training . We also have a elder dog but still Bruno didn't like his walks initially , But now he loves it , may be cause he gets his off-leash time everyday on the walks . Cheers Vish
Re: Walking your puppy Thanks for the advice..i was beginning to think Zulu was abnormal for not wanting to go for a morning walk. I'll just let him have a run/play/sniff around the garden instead.
Re: Walking your puppy Charlie didn't go for street walks for months. It's also much better to teach your pup how to walk alongside you of lead, then put a lead on. Save yourself a nightmare of pulling later. There is lots of info on the site.
Re: Walking your puppy Thanks... strange you mention that as Zulu happily walks with me when he doesnt have his lead on and we in the garden. The only reason i persisted in taking zulu for walks becuase of the "5mins for every month of age" rule. I figured he is almost 3 months so should be doing atleast 15mins per day... and i wasnt sure of sniffing around the garden counted towards his 15mins per day.
Re: Walking your puppy No, access to a garden, and playtime is just fine at first. I took Charlie for a walk at about 4 months. Realised I was heading for a pulling on the lead problem and immediately switched to driving to off lead exercise places. Reading up on how to do the whole lead walking thing so you never generate a pulling problem is SO worth it, by the way. Just to add: I didn't wait until 4 months to let him off his lead in terms of walks though - as soon as his vaccinations were done, he was off lead in the middle of a football pitch, and then the beach. Just for 10 minutes at first. When I say "walks" I mean lead walks.
