I have read a few articles on keyhole surgery, where only the ovaries are removed. The dog recovers really quickly. What does everyone think about this? Are there any negatives?
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? Yes, my springer bitch had this op earlier in the year. She recovered super fast. Pippa has posted about this type of spay a little while ago. Will try and find it later. My vet has carried out about 300 of these ops and highly recommended it.
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? Before this op became available I would have not chosen to own a bitch. But now I would. If you are going to have a bitch speyed this certainly seems to minimise the impact
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? I am currently debating which method to use when having my bitch speyed in the near future. Personally I feel safer with a traditional Spey as I have so much experience of dealing with them (7 years working in a rescue centre) and I know exactly what is involved, all possible complications and recovery time etc. However the keyhole Spey does seem very appealing - it totally minimises recovery time which is great, especially for a young active dog. My concern with keyhole was that because it's only the ovaries removed and the womb is left behind doesn't this put the bitch still at risk from things like pyometra? But I have been assured by a good friend who is a vet that this isn't the case - pyometra is caused when the lining of the womb thickens from ovulation and because there are no ovaries there is no ovulation and therefore no thickening. Which reminds me that I have another question about keyhole Spey ...do you get the same level of hormone reduction as with a traditional Spey? Some of my dogs behaviour issues can be linked to her hormones so I also need to consider which method will give her the most hormonal stability.
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? I had Tatze done by the normal method, not keyhole - and the wound was only two inches long. Tatze recovered in a couple of days and left the stitches alone - no cone needed. So I feel I did the right thing. I somehow preferred the vet to be able see what she was doing! But I have nothing whatever against keyhole, I have had it myself
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? If the ovaries are removed there shouldn't be any hormonal influence on the dog from keyhole surgery, same as traditional spaying.
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? I tried to find a Vet who would offer this procedure, but the nearest one was quite a distance away. I do not feel competent to deal with a sudden emergency so I have opted for a traditional spay at my local Vet's who I have every confidence in. It is 14 years since I had a bitch spayed, she bounced back very quickly (don't think she realised she was supposed to be taking things easy). No doubt there has been progress in Vetinary medicine since 2000
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? Hi Jane, one of my cockers had a laprascopic spay recently. You can read about it here
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? Thanks very much for your replies; it seems straight forward to me. Thankfully I don't need to decide for at least a year if I have a bitch but it helps to consider these things when deciding between a dog and a bitch.
Re: Has anyone had their bitch spayed using keyhole surgery? It was the reason I chose a boy! Couldn't stand the thought of a worry about spaying a bitch again, even though nothing went wrong with the five bitches I had spayed over the years.
