Quite honestly I just wanted to share my problem as the age old saying a problem shared is a problem halved!

Barkley my 5 month yellow lab is poorly again! First we've witnessed him limping a couple of times very on off and for no more than a minute at a time so we are getting him xrayed in a week to check his hips...second he had a very upset tummy so back to the vets we go for some paste which will help him out and now he's got conjunctivitis with a trip to the vets last night as it's Bank Holiday weekend and we didn't want to risk leaving it! We've got some drop and we woke up this morning to find its in both eyes and he didn't eat all his food this morning which NEVER happens. I just feel like it's never ending at the moment and I'm constantly worrying about the little fella.

Is it just me being a worry wart or are other lab owners just as crazy as me lol xx

Oh the poor little man, and poor you! All of us would be just as worried, so you are not alone.

In his first year with us Obi also had hip x-rays (also due to a limp...result = hips perfect), a dog bite, kennel cough, ringworm and several fillings in his teeth (long story). Most recently he has had another filling and is now on steroids for an allergy. So, I totally get the 'it never ends!' feeling. But you get through it... :)

I really hope that the limp turns out to be nothing at all and that the eye problem clears up really fast :)

Much sympathy. I had to make an insurance claim recently, and this required Charlie's medical history to be printed out. It took a while...

Along with the normal puppy vet visits we've had trips for runny eyes (he grew out of that, although they look a little worse again this spring so we might have an allergy thing), ear infections (10s of visits, and ended up with a referral to a dermatologist), dodgy tummies, and Cruciate injury - which goes on and on.

I think it feels a bit like kids having a raft of childhood illnesses and accidents! I'm hoping it all gets better!

At 5 months your pup is still growing and dogs can get growing pains just like humans do. Hopefully it's just this rather than anything else, but it's good you're getting the x rays.

I think you've just been unlucky in that it's all happened at the same time. Hopefully once everything is cleared up you will have a long time without anything to worry about :)

With the conjunctivitis are you also bathing his eyes? I was always told to bathe them to remove the funk before applying the drops. Just make sure you use a seperate peice of tissue for each eye.

I know it feels like it goes on forever - when Penny was younger she had urine infections almost constantly until she was 8 months old, which meant her housetraining was messed up too. I felt like it would never get better but it did. Just stick with it, we're all here if you need to share :)

Thanks everyone! Bit of an emotional wreck today so this has really helped me to feel better :)

I'm washing his eye with cotton wool pads not using the same one on each eye before the drops. He seems to have burst of energy then flumps on the floor for a rest. Guessing with conjuctivitis you don't feel so great either! Bless him!

I totally understand where you are coming from. Harley is 8.5 months old and only recently has she been at full health. Since we got her we had continuous diarrhoea, some pure blood and quite often vomiting. It is a horrible time as they can't speak and tell you what wrong.
Stick in there, he will be ok in the end.
The one thing that really helped me through everything with Harley was the lovely people on here supporting and advising me on things I could try.
For the upset tummy, it might be worth putting him on chicken and rice for a day or so to settle it.
Let us know how you are both getting on x

I liken pups to young children , they seem to get infections as their immune systems are not fully developed . I remember a Doctor friend pointing out to me that his waiting room was full of young children, but once past about the age of 7 , very few , so I guess its the same for pups ;)

I was going to say the same as Kate.

The vet told me when they were pups and we'd been for what felt like the hundredth time that they would grow out of it as their immune systems developed.

    your not alone, honestly

In the first year of having barley we were at the vets every month with him, and at times every week for problems.
He has managed to get a long list of injuries and illnesses. Not every time going to the vet for them as some we have had to deal with many times so can treat them at home as long as they are minor.
    His list included:
    Dog bite
    Missing tip of tail
    conjunctivitis
    lots of diarrhea and vomiting
    ingestion of salt
    grass seeds in both ears
    infected anal glands
    cut paws
    infected paws from chewing
    sore paws from chewing
superglue stuck on back of neck
    grass seed in foot
    funny turn
    back leg limping
    front leg limping
    Various allergy's towards unknown things

and many more things that i can not remember off the top of my head

So sorry you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all. I hope it all clears up soon and that the X-rays don't show anything ominous.
