I think you've already started a thread on lovely names for girl owls! ;D ;D ;D We're super good at bird names. Rachael will tell you.

What about Cas? Then you can say her name is Casper, but you call her Cas? Then add a "e" sound and you'll have Cassie in no time... ;D ;D ;D

Carole, Carole, Carole, didn't I mention somewhere not to give these people naming rights over your pets? ;)

Having said that, I'd go with (a). Just stick to Casper :)

    ROFL !!!!!!!

I'd opt for (a) too especially if it's not obvious (s)he's a girl......did I read something once about all birds of prey being referred to as she in te same way ships are? Or is that some random Terry Pratchett memory......

;D I do like the Cas idea - neatly solves the dilemma perhaps I didn't think of it as I've spent my whole life telling people not to call me Cas!

    Hmm...Cas....Casseiopia! It's perfect!!!!! ;D

    From Wikipedia:
Cassiopeia is a constellation in the northern sky, named after the vain queen Cassiopeia in Greek mythology, who boasted about her unrivalled beauty.

It FITS!! Night sky: well, owls, duh.
Vain Queen: owls DO have that haughty look about them, right?
    Unrivalled beauty: natch.

And you can shorten it to Cass, a nod to dear little Casper. No worries about the brochure, you can say this is Casper's sister....which is kinda sorta true. Sister by heart, anyways.....

    I rest my case.

    Re: Owls

Very exciting day - we finally went to collect our new pack member this morning and here she is!

Before we got her Ian had decided he was going to stick with Casper but the brainwave in the van on the way home is...

Keira - (she goes out nightly geddit!) and has a similar sound to Ian - the breeders called it little Ian!!! she answers to Ian right now ;D

She's also a lot more grown up than we realised at just 9 weeks old she has a tiny bit of down left but mostly has her adult feathers, is down to two meals a day (will be one meal in about 4 weeks)

She will need to be in the house for at least another month before she's strong enough to be outside and we have to socialise her like mad over the next few weeks.

She had her anklets put on today so her primary distraction is trying to pull them off - in the next day or two we'll add the jesses.
Ian has taken her to the office this afternoon so only one pic so far but I'm owl sitting this evening which is when we'll introduce the dogs - should be interesting...

Oh My goodness! Ian dropped her back with me as he's gone sailing tonight. She just took her first flight - the breeder predicted she would fly in next day or so - but she's flying around my dining room discovering the joy of wings!

Update and more photos of Kiera the Barn owl

Sorry it's been a few days but our already hectic lives have just got a lot more lively with a young owl in the house!

She's now lost most of her down and pretty much has her adult feathers although she still has some growing to do. Her progress is astonishing and I thought puppies grow quickly! The second day she started to try out sitting on a perch rather than a flat surface. By the end of the day she was perching in her travel box very happily. Her flying is improving as is her landing! The dogs are fascinated, we've not let them in the same room yet but they watch through the glass door and she watches back - very entertaining. More pictures below :D
