Re: I need advice please Hi I had a fussy eater. My old lab was picky all his life until I tried him with fish4dogs. Loved it ate like a real dog. The two I have now wolf their food down but they have each other to compete with. If you aren't happy with the food change it. Unfortunately some of the large expensive brands like royal canin aren't necessarily the best. Find a food you are happy with and then persevere with that. My vets used to be pro Hills scientific then they changed to selling Royal Canin and what do you know they went off reccomending Hills. :
Re: I need advice please
Thanks for that Iv just checked and I can get it here in the UK. I'm going to go to the vets I think, alot of people are telling me that there are better options for her. My vet is just very pro Royal Canin- its what the practice sells, they have told me to not change and persevere because it could be a fussy stage she is going through. Thanks again. Hi Angela ;D thanks for advice. I have changed her before and it was a nightmare so i am reluctant to try again but Royal Canin I'm thinking just isn't for her.
My vet recommends food they're familiar with because they know how it works, but I'm not a fan of corn/wheat and the lack of real food! It's just my personal opinion however. I know it can be stressful trying to problem solve and find what works with our pets. Hopefully you can find a solution, maybe it is just a picky phase and in time she will devour her bowl! Best wishes!
Re: I need advice please Trisha - if you do decide to change foods can I suggest Bob and Lush as a possibility. I had months of problems with Harley's sensitive tummy and she was on royal canin gastro. It took lots of weeks of chicken and rice, medications and tests. Works out she is wheat intolerant!
Re: I need advice please
Don't know much about Royal Canin, is it wheat free Hypoallergenic? One of my dogs cannot eat anything with wheat, a small piece of toast and she vomits. She is on Skinners Field and Trial Duck and Rice.
As my previous post Skinners Field and Trial Duck and Rice is completely free from wheat gluten, maize gluten, barley gluten, soya and dairy products.
Re: I need advice please At the moment with a bit of hot water added she seems to be eating it, not all at once and still slowly but at least she is getting her daily requirement. I had her to the vets yesterday and she has lost a small amount of weight she was 26.68kg and now she weighs 24.10kg . I'm told not to be worried as she is in good condition and not thin. Vet said 7 months can be a funny age and she is prob just being fussy {i'm not buying that so easily} i'll not panic just yet and i'll just continue to keep a close eye on her. thanks again for all the advice..
Re: I need advice please I wouldn't worry too much about the vomiting after drinking and the advice that you've had on here seems spot on to me. The extra air and perhaps a little bloatedness from the feed is probably all it is. But, back to my favourite subject and there will be those who take exception to what I'm going to categorically state. Royal Canin is an OK, all in one food, no more, no less - it's expensive because you're paying for an expensive marketing machine. Contrary to the vets opinion ( who I assume sells the stuff) it is not 'excellent', there are many all in ones that are better IMHO Have a read of this post http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=5699.0 Sure it will be fine, keep us all posted on what you decide.
Re: I need advice please She did it again today, took her out for about an hour, she had a good run about with my friends English Pointer, I made sure she had a few water stops. Got her home let her have a small drink then took it off her, waited about 10 mins then gave her another small drink. She went into her bed and then about 15 mins later she vomited.
Re: I need advice please I appreciate how worrying this will be for you and how helpless you feel but I think your vet is probably right on it being a 'phase'. Assuming she is not bringing up her food, it's not yellow bile and she doesn't have diarrhoea, then I would eliminate the cause for a few weeks, i.e. stop her from running around like an idiot and exhausting herself. A little gentler on her exercise for a week or so and don't let her become over excited. If you feel inclined, during this time of calmness - maybe try adding some tripe or other 'smelly' (but very tasty to her) to her food to encourage her to eat. And yes, stick to the 20 minutes or it's gone. Dogs digestive systems are slow and not suited to grazing. Then over time make it an objective to get rid of The Royal Canin, she definitely doesn't sound as if she's thriving on it, it's stressing you and I get the feeling you're not too happy with it either. Go with your intuition and get her on something else.
Re: I need advice please If your vet sells Royal Canin then he probably gets a commission for it. Most vets promote something. Mine is the Hills Science plan at the mo! My puppy is 12 weeks and I wanted to change the food the breeder had him on. I waited a week, then changed it very gradually over 14 days, slowly increasing the new food each day, and he never had any tummy issues. I swopped to Fish for dogs puppy food and he loves it. His coat looks great. Jan
Re: I need advice please My vet sells Royal Canin and every time I go to pay the bill they ask if I would be interested. To which my answer is a big fat no. It is expensive and full of fillers. I would definitely change her food if your not happy with it. Also choose a food where meat is the description as the meat content varies by simple wording. It is something like if the label says 'chicken and rice' there has to be at least 40% 'with chicken and rice' 25% and if it is 'flavour' it doesn't have to have any meat at all. I can't be 100% on the numbers but I'm sure it will be on the Internet somewhere.
