I'm thinking about calling my new pup...when I finally get him...Chester.

Is it a bit too 'Catty' or will my dog be able to doggy-fy it do you think?

Additionally, every now and again I seem to get 'second-thoughts' about getting the pup. I get a bit scared about the commitment, the work, the hair..you know.. but then I read someone's experiences or see a cute picture and my love and desire is rekindled and then...wow...I feel like I'm going to burst with excitement (I even do a little jig sometimes but don't tell anyone :D) Is this normal behaviour or am I just mad?

    Mad ;D Only joking ;) ;)

I think many people have pre puppy nerves , we know we want one but at times it can seem overwhelming , likewise once puppy arrives many owners have that " What have I done " moment , but very very few regret it :)

Chester sounds a good name for a male dog.

Getting a new puppy IS exciting, so other lab owners will understand your little jig. There are few sights quite as cute as a litter of Lab puppies. Taking responsibility for a puppy will change your life, and there is lots of practical advice about living with a lab on Pippa's site.

A puppy is a huge commitment. With luck and good care it will be with you for 12 or more years.

When they are little the are a massive interference in your lives. You may well have 'what have I got myself into moments.' I certainly did.

What kept me going was my strong belief that I didn't have the right to mess up her life because I'd made a mistake. I am a committed vege, with strong ethics on sentient creatures.

Also, I'd met her mum and dogs from previous litters and I knew I could make a smashing dog out of her if I was prepared to put to put the effort in.

Chester would be a good name for a male dog.

I think Chester is a great name! I wouldn't have thought about it being a cats name :)

I had pre-puppy nerves and the "what have I done moment"! During the first week that we had Maisie I really wobbled as it appeared that I'd brought home a furry crocodile instead of a puppy! But thankfully the lovely people on this site said it was all normal and things would improve, and they did! I wouldn't be without her now ;D

It's normal to have "am I doing the right thing?" thoughts - good, in a way, because it means you realise it's a big commitment, as well as a load of fun.

Just make sure you've thought through how it will change your life, if you have the time at home or the finances to pay for puppy care (if available where you are) if you work and to cover insurance or medical bills and so on. Once you know how you are going to work everything like that, go for it!

I'm had those second thoughts feelings, I'm only 2.5 days in with my 8.5 week old pup and a 6 yr old and 1.5 yr old children. I will tell ya, my children are stressing me out more than the dog I think it's completely normal to have occasional reservations. It's a lot of work and a huge commitment! But in the end the rewards will outweigh the stress and worry.

I think Chester is adorable for a pup!

Yes, this is a bit of an area really. At present I will be able to afford things but there is a risk, pretty small but real nonetheless, that that could change in the future you know and that I would have to find another job pretty sharpish. I've thought about it a lot but it's got to be worth the risk doesn't it? What do you think? Should I risk it or should the thought of being unable to care for my dog in the future put me off? Actually, this is quite an important point I think so I'll probably start a new topic on it. :-\

By the way, thanks for the supportive replies so far. I am grateful. ;)

    Hi. And welcome

    Chester is a lovely name.
O those feelings are all quite normal and when that puppy arrives you think OMG what have I done ! But that also passes and now at 11 weeks it's getting easier and she is a little sweet heart. Just go for it. It's great and the best thing I've done. And I have a 6,3 and 10 month old !
