    Dear Forum members,

In anticipation of getting a pup in the near future...not near enough mind you. :'(..a friend of mine has given me a dog crate or cage to house a pup. Great. However, it is a little old and has quite a bit of rust on it. My question of course is whether this presents any potential health hazard to the puppy; so should I buy a new one? Simples. :)

Depends on two things - is it the right size for a puppy? and would getting the rust off it be more trouble than it is worth?

    Hi K,

yes it's the right size but getting off all the rust would be a big job. So you advise a no go then..presumably the rust is a health hazard??

If there's rust there might be rough or jagged bits. That'd be my only worry. Depends on how much rust.

Can you give it a good seeing-to with a wire brush and then spray paint it with some rust-inhibiting metal paint?

Any chance of a pic? :)

I too would be worried about jagged bits or bits breaking off. Of course it depends on the condition - if it's a very small amount you might be able to sand it off and paint over it, but if it's quite a lot you might want to think about buying a new one. I would be worried about the puppy potentially chewing or licking the bars and ingesting bits of rust.

When in doubt - SPEND! ;D
I'd worry about the pup licking or chewing the metal too.
Maybe you could use it for something else? I don't know what!

You will need at least two crates as they (the pups) have a tendency to grow.

We use our first one for travel now, so it wasn't a waste.

Frequently seen on small ads or Gumtree.

Alert. You are SERIOUSLY nest building

John, I have bought a large crate but also bought a divider so we can start of cosy and increase the area as she grows. I am happy with that choice and I have tried it out; it seems fine. But I have also bought a crate for the car.

I don't know if this will be of any use but you can by plastic spray in an aerosol to coat things in plastic.

If the metal is still sound and not going to snap you could coat it in that to stop pup getting at rust.

Don't know the technical name for it sorry. ::)

Might be called Plastidip? People use that to change the colour of bits of their cars and you could get it at automotive shops. Not sure how durable it is tho.

I think I agree with Jane and I'll put my hand into my pocket :)

I would upload a pic Rachel but I've only recently got a mobile and I'm not sure exactly how to take a picture with it ...can't be too difficult though eh?

Is the issue of how to get the phone to take the picture? Or getting it uploaded? Or posting?

So the instructions should be the same for the Siii as the mini I think ;)

Vaguely....you need to get some apps on your home screen - camera one clearly needs to go on!
