We live right on the edge of a vast forest, full of wildlife (red deer, roe deer, wild boar...). Yesterday evening as I came back from our walk it was getting dark, and a deer was standing right in the middle of the path. As it bounded off, Poppy was off after it like a shot. I called her, but she was already stretched out at full gallop. I was horrified - chasing deer is an absolute no-no here, dogs can even legally be shot if they are caught in the act by the local hunter or forester.

Thank goodness I had the recall whistle round my neck. Two sharp blasts - and to my huge relief she stopped dead in her tracks, turned round and came back to me at full speed!!!!!! Luckily I had some cheese cubes in my pocket (as you do ::) - they're her favourite) - believe me, she got the lot!!!

Good girl, Pops! I was so proud. Thank goodness, and I'll have to keep more of an eye out now, don't want her to start chasing wildlife... Of course when I have a dummy with me she is completely focused on me, but as has been pointed out in different threads, these working strain labs have a strong prey drive which needs to be channelled!

way to go Poppy! and you! That is awesome. I know for a fact Master Brodick would have been off and a black speck in the distance in no time they can fairly shift these pups...and if he went, so would Cuillin. A ginger speck in the distance....

I find with Sam that the minute I relax , he reacts and starts to lose it , its ongoing though isnt it ? One day perfect ( or close :) ) then the next day he decides to mess about, nothing serious and have to remember he isnt yet an adult, just need to keep on with training .
I dont know what Sam would have done, 50/50 :)

That sounds like a very close shave

It is very fortunate that you had some good rewards on you. And that you have put so much effort into getting a good recall established! ;D
