She ran off again. We have had a few weeks of great behaviour, I pick my times now for her walks when I think it is going to be quiet and up until yesterday we were doing well.
Went to the beach at 19.30, all was quiet, we were having lots of fun, she was running and swimming. Behind me she saw a group of teenagers coming onto the beach with 2 dogs. One of the lads saw scout running and tried to catch his dog (a staffy) but wasn't fast enough and I just couldn't believe it my heart was pounding- luckily it was friendly and he ran after it because he thought it would help me catch Scout (I was wrong to assume it was going to be aggressive) anyway it took about 10 mins to catch her and put her back on her lead.

One of these days she isn't going to be that lucky and she is going to be seriously hurt/attacked. She is too fast for me when off the lead but she just doesn't get the exercise when on, she needs her runs.

I used a long line when I had problems with Harley around young children, it worked brilliantly :D

They are sent to try our patience aren't they ;)

Good advice here , use a long training line until you have practised recall and got it pretty solid , it can take time but keep the training sessions short, but regular . At some time , you will need to proof the recall by bringing in another person or dog to test her out fully but dont despair if it doesnt work out straight away, just keep up the training and the penny will drop :)

I used a lightweight polypropylene style line that I got from B&Q (or somewhere similar) and attached a clip (also from hardware shop). Few knots in the end to stop if stood on. Best with a harness to prevent jerking her neck if you have to stop her full tilt.
I found the flat lead style training lines too heavy, and they get wet and manky quicker.
    (of course.....I have perfected recall....not!)

Trish, a long line here too still it's a pain but it's the only way to practise recall and from other dogs, people etc. I use a harness too, never use a flat collar or a lot of damage can be done to a dogs neck if they decide to take off after something. Scout is a good girl so it won't take long and see if you can rope your doggie friends in to help you. Good luck x

    Thanks you guys.
She did it again tonight, she got so close to a main road this time god I was scared. I only threw the frisbee three times before she ran off after another lab. I go from panic to relief to rage and then all I want to do is go home, we were only gone about 20 mins and most of that time I spent looking for a quiet spot.
Im on websites looking for a training lead but a visit to pets at home is on the cards tomorrow I think. You know what the most annoying thing is... she knows she has done wrong by running off, so that means she knows its wrong, so why does she do it? :-[

I know that feeling of panic. Definitely go for the training line I think.
Hope you are okay - that mix of panic and fright is enough to make you weep.

Make sure its really light Trisha - better to see it rather than buy of the internet I would say.

Thank you, I am ok now xx
You are so right, once I have her and get her back in the car I could so easily put my head in my heads and cry from the shear panic, frustration and then relief. I was drained when I got back and my hands were shaking, I took my ages to settled down and just feel calm.

And I will wait till I go to the shop tomorrow before I buy, thanks x

That's scary. Definitely need some management in place, to make things go smoothly.

Have you got a copy of total recall? If you can work through some of the exercises in there, that will help. The training line will help, but you need to be actively training the recall, not just using it as a long lead.

She doesn't know it's "wrong", she really doesn't. I honestly doubt dogs have a concept of "right" and "wrong". Only what makes a good outcome for them or a bad one - and having a big game with another dog is a good outcome. She isn't trained to stay with you when she sees another dog, and isn't trained to recall away from other dogs. So that's what you have to work on. :)

    Great, well done.

Settle down and read total recall. Follow the exercises, don't cut corners, and the results will be rewarding for the rest of scout's life. It's a bit of hard work, but it's the way to go.

    Best of luck with it.

    Hey Trisha

I guess some of our labs are over friendly . I think Julie put it rite , Get on total recall today , it will never let u down . Trust me even Simba is the same , Any dog insight all he wants to do is run to them . I never let him off leash expect in fenced dog parks and on the beach , But i need to keep running behind him :( . But hes far better than what we started of with when we got him from the rescue .

    Cheer-up

Let us know how it goes .

    Cheers
    Vish

Trisha we are in the same boat with Benson, and sometimes he is good on recall, around the farm he is excellent, however off leash on one of his favourite walks he can drive me to distraction! Got very panicky the other day as he disappeared in some woods after a terrier and I couldn't see him. We ordered 2 long lines and they arrived today, need to get him used to a harness, before using them.
Our gundog trainer also suggested using a long lead :)
