We had a bit of a scare with Buddy at a BBQ yesterday as he pounced on a sausage that fell from the hot BBQ coals. My husband stood on it, but Buddy would not be deterred and gobbled the half that was sticking out from under his shoe. He swallowed it whole even though it was scorching hot. He refused to have any water, then half an hour later threw up the intact half sausage and the contents of his tummy. He let me look in his mouth and the roof was very red. I gave him a frozen kong hoping that it would reduce the swelling. The roof of his mouth still looks a bit red, but he is eating normally again. Has any one else had a lab eat something hot?

The poor little man!!!! They don't know what's good for them, do they.

Giving him cold things is the way to go, I would say. Give him very soft foods for the next few days too...

He is probably quite sore but it will heal up. From what you say it's looking less red now?

Poor Buddy :( if his mouth does calm down I would pop him to the vet. If his mouth is sore he may have blisters where it was so hot. Let us know how he is

Thanks for the messages! I'm pleased to report that Buddy is back to his usual self so no trips to the vet were needed. The roof of his mouth has patches of pinker skin where he burnt it, but there are no blisters or any swelling. I forgot to mention that I'd offered him ice cubes immediately afterwards and he refused them. Today I gave him some frozen gravy cubes (a bit late for first aid!) and he thought these were much better!

Next time we BBQ, I'm watching him like a hawk!

    Before we get too sentimental....

The call to play at five o’clock.
The missing toys, the stolen sock,
    The snaffled sausages and bread,
The holes dug in the flower bed.
The muddy pawprints where you’ve washed,
The brand new plant that’s just been squashed.
The innocent look that says “who, me?”
But would we change them? No sirree!

The poem was posted by Phil ( Holly's Dad) on the puppy page and made me think of my little sausage snaffler! Thanks Phil!
